Sometimes in politics the only thing worse than losing is winning.
Let's start with the losing. I'm most bitter about the defeat of Proposition 90, the statewide initiative that would have banned eminent domain for private use and required cities to pay compensation for property value taken by regulation. It lost, 52.5 percent to 47.5 percent, pretty close given that the "yes on 90" campaign didn't do much of anything.
I expected the corporate guys who benefit from eminent domain and the government agencies that like to exert their power to fund a powerful "no" campaign, deceptive as it was in many ways. But what explains the proponents spending $2 million to gather signatures to put Prop. 90 on the ballot and then not running a serious campaign to get it passed? Not until the last weekend did the campaign even do radio ads, and there were absolutely no TV ads to debunk the opposition's "taxpayer trap" ads.
Someone I talked to in the "no" campaign said that side just kept waiting and waiting for the "yes" side to do something. Prop. 90 might have won with any effort at all. The "yes" side never had enough press conferences with victims of eminent domain abuse. The "yes" side said it lacked resources. Very disappointing. Fortunately, the state's property-rights activists are already talking about an eminent-domain-only measure for 2008, which is a good idea. Such initiatives in local and state races nationwide passed overwhelmingly Tuesday. The opponents of 90, who repeatedly claimed that they would have no problem with 90 had it not been for the regulatory takings provision, ought to jump on board that idea, right?
They won't, of course, but whoever pushes the next initiative ought to have a better plan for winning the election, ...

"Republicrats..'
Am I reading this correctly? People in California like eminent domain?
WE have too many idiots in this state.
Oh, yes, and this author is the kind of person who is bashing Arnold, wishing that he had lost to Angelides, "for the good of the GOP".
I am sure they don't but the same happened here in Washington State.
The opponents ran a very misleading campaign (huge finance by Paul Allen) saying that a 'YES' would cost the taxpayers billions and lead to strip malls and urban sprawl.
The proponents barely put up a fight or any rebuttals.
The initiative was I-933 and it was more about compensating landowners for the state restricting use of rural property than eminent domain but the effect was the same. But it wasn;t about zoning but about actually using a farm for farm purposes. In other words if you want to clear a field for next years potatos, well tough, you're not allowed to touch it even to clear debris for fire mitigation. Basically the state condemned property that owners must still pay property taxes on.
Then there is the red-legged frog phenomenon, etc. You get the picture.
From the article:
" And unless we can start punishing Republicans by causing their candidates to lose if they don't embrace our ideas, I don't think the party will pay attention to us.
That's another way that losing can be better than winning."
With Republicans like this guy, who needs Democrats -- talking about cutting off his nose to spite his face, and WE all suffer.
Leave it to a TWirP to tell me how to excerpt and try to imply something in so doing. There is an excerptimng rule you know, and you just violated it with your post.... Thanks!
Priceless, btw.
Nice bolding , much like your TWirP clone at FR uses to snip out insinuative attacks.
If people want to read the entire article , they can do so on their own, or ask me, I would gladly FReep mail oit to them if they wish..
the previous poster has an agenda and will stop at nothing to get it out and ridicule anyone who isn't a bootlicker for our Progressive GUbinor.
The ones at risk with passage of Prop 90 were those who survive off the govt. Everyone from city, county and state employees, the enviros, land trusts, etc. could have lost some of 'their' revenue stream. No idea why, but even the California Farm Bureau said no. I suspect they didn't want any of their friends in Sacramento to get mad at them. Fewer and fewer of the voters are landowners. If you don't own land, why limit the ability of the govt. to take some and let you use it? The county here proposed taking my dad's timber property for a dump. It happened to be one of the ones in the county large enough.Great use of resources.
No.. it is Emmet D. Mane, pitcher for the Padress
and top rookie of the year..Jake
they also like 13 year olds and such getting abortions and pregnancy advice without consultation of the parents, no surprise really, but it is sad nonetheless.
this would have ended up in the courts anyway like almost everything else does these days.
The point is that the most important part of the article is NOT prop.90, but about advocating that Republicans NOT vote for Republican candidates to cause them to lose to the Dems.
Pathetic.
Yes, you are.
The author states that he almost applauded when he found out that Allen lost to Webb, which meant Dem control of the Senate also. Some Republican!
Uh, the election is over. Democrats won, except for the Governator. Republicans lost, except . . well, you see what Mr. Greenhut is saying?
The Republican party is through, finished, as a party of smaller government, individual liberty, property rights as human rights, etc. Its goals are aligned on the same axis as the Democrats: power, control over your life and your property, power, shutting down the opposition, power. One party uses the power of unions to win elections, the other uses the power of big business interests. Neither gives a cr*p about people such as you and me.
Trying to effect change within the GOP is like trying to put out a fire with gasoline. Greenhut at last recognizes it, even if FairOpinion does not. Or maybe he would let it burn.
Why, did you also applaud when you found out that Allen lost and the Dems will control the Senate also -- as the author did?
Do you agree that conservatives should punish Republicans to lose to socialist leftist Dems to teach them a lesson -- as the author advocates?
Do you also advocate that it's better that Republicans lose, even if it means control of Congress is in Dem hands -- as the author does?
Do you agree with the author, when he claims that the Bush administration has been an unmitigated disaster and Bush lied to get us into the Iraq war?
