Hastert's been in Congress about 20 years, so he's probably maxed out perecentage-wise.
80% of $212,000 is significantly more than 80% of 165,000; like on the order of $37,600 per year.
Okay: One of the dumbest and most meaningless rumors I've heard yet.
I don't know, but the one in the runoff was a rather reactionary DemocRAT. That's why the liberal DemocRATS voted for Tower.
Thanks tundra

What's the old joke?
"Have I heard he was retiring? Heck, I hadn't even heard he was indicted."
This law needs to be changed.
You could have musical speakers.
For example, Hastert resigns, the house elects hayworth speaker, who resigns, and house elects hoestetler speaker, he resigns, and ann northcutt gets elected, she resigns and katherine harris (who is still a lame duck) is elected speaker, etc.
And If you don't think the dems will not pull the same stunt if we take the house back in 2008, you are nuts.
Little ding ~~
I think what tenthirteen is trying to say is that Hastert is do what really want to need because .
The story is baloney but this tidbit stands out--it just sounds so typical of this misfit so-called party--ignore the hispanic lady, what do we care about her for?
I need this at this late hour? How about ding-a-ling?
LOL
BTW, I actually heard someone give a canned pitch for LaHood as Minority Leader, on the Hugh Hewitt program two days ago. Humorous. Someone on his staff, it would seem.
As for CD-14, hm... I think it would be more than the money, for Hastert. We know that it is the norm for Illinois Publords to need to avoid scrutiny. Hopefully, he'll just do a decent job of (here's an idea) serving his real boss, the American People, for the next couple years.
FOTFLOL! Now there's precisely the appropriate post!!!

Speaking of which, why not Cornyn for Prez. in 2008?
Yer right, quidnunc! Yer always right! Every time!
Stay well, pal.................FRegards
(It's 'lassies', not 'lasses')
Tom Roser is VERY well-connected in Illinois politics.
He wouldn't have posted this if he didn't think it was plausible.
Hastert's first electoral opponent was Mary Lou Kearns (who was smarter, more articulate and more attractive than Hastert) who was a Democrat only because she was given the cold-shoulder by the old bulls in the Kane County Republican Party.
It was the governor James Thompson who got Hastert on the ballot, and if memory serves, Hastert wasn't even a resident of the district at the time.
I think Republicans ought to not have any Texans, southerners, or people named Bush on the 2008 ticket. Winning southern states isn't a problem for the GOP. Winning northern and northeas states and California is.
"The amount of a Congressperson's pension depends on the years of service and the average of the highest 3 years of his or her salary. By law, the starting amount of a Member's retirement annuity may not exceed 80% of his or her final salary" So resigning doesn't make him a nickel.
I don't know, the way I read that, if he resigns now his starting retirement annuity could be up to $169,680 ($212K * .80) instead of "only" $132,160 (165K * .80). So, he would stand to benefit by resigning now. In any case, congressmen have set themselves up pretty nicely for retirement...living out their golden years on the public trough.

Good point, since Ohio is probably lost for 2008. Giuliani / Duncan Hunter may be an intriguing ticket.
