The latest example of Washington's disturbing tendency to do Mexico's bidding concerns the popular bounty hunter Duane "Dog" Chapman, whom U.S. marshals arrested last month. Mr. Chapman's crime? In June 2003, he apprehended Andrew Luster in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where the convicted rapist had fled some five months earlier. Because of Mr. Chapman, Luster is now serving his 124-year sentence in California. We think this makes Mr. Chapman a hero; but the Mexican government says he's a criminal.
Bounty hunting is illegal in Mexico. So, when Mr. Chapman brought Luster into custody in Mexico he too was detained. But after posting bond, Mr. Chapman returned to Hawaii, where he's been ever since. The matter seemed to be dropped. Now, three years later, Mexico wants him back to face charges and the U.S. government appears ready to cooperate.
It shouldn't. First, it is highly doubtful that the Mexican authorities were unaware of Luster's presence in one of the most popular cities for American tourists. For five months, they let Luster be, even as U.S. federal agents were out looking for him.

I had read that this is a felony in Mexico and he could get major time. In any event, I am not necessarily a fan of the Dog, but I strongly oppose his extradition. This is disgusting beyond words. I hope Condoleeza Rice has the toughness to oppose stop this in its tracks.
The fact that this case has got this far show how bad of a politician Bush is. Is it any wonder the Republicans are going to lose the house?
Laws are for people we like, too.
How about this: We'll send them The Dog, if they'll come and get all 12,000,000 of their lawbreakers here.
Gonzalez had better let this one drop. First of all, turning an American citizen over to a foreign country for an act that isn't criminal in the US is borderline illegal. Secondly, Chapman set right a wrong that Mexico was actively involved in committing, and that is why they are so ticked off. They better let this one die on the vine. Turning a high profile, and by all accounts heroic celebrity that is immensely popular with your base over to Mexican authorities for the supposed 'crime' of capturing a fugitive from US Justice would absolutely erode base Republican support to the point of collapse. I wonder if anyone within the administration has thought anything about the political ramifications of this case?
If the treaty didn't apply to Mr. Luster, why should it apply to Mr. Chapman?
Reciprocity should work both ways. Mexico puts huge hurdles in our way before we can extradite murderers and rapists from their country. And I don't think this country even bothers trying to extradite burglars and car thieves from Mexico. Mexico should drop this request, as this does not rise to the level of a capital crime.
I will be deeply disappointed with our government if they extradite Dog. Not only would it be a huge blow to our legal system, it would be a waste of time and money. Bounty hunting is not illegal in the US and therefore we have no obligation to extradite him to Mexico. SAVE DOG!!!!!!!!!!
let's see, we try to get murderers extradited from mexico, and they refuse because of the "death penalty", yet they want us to extradite a law abiding citizen to their corrupt, squalid prison system. with the way our own government has been behaving with mexico, sounds like a done deal
"SAVE DOG!!!!!!!!!!"
Lets get the email and calls started. Bombard every congressman and official in Washington.
Let Mexico have him, I would be outraged and I am sure a lot of you agree with me. My opinion doesn't count, however, with hundreds agreeing with me will count.
Lets get to work on the emails and calls.
Laws are also for 12,000,000 fence-jumpers, although you wouldn't know it from the actions of the president, a lot of congress, and Attorney General Speedy Gonzales.
Another reason Ms. Rice seems to be on the terrorists side first she panders to Hamas next the creepy hispanolas.
She reminds me of whats her name Albitch or was it Allbright or not so bright

Guilty of first-degree gringo. Death sentence.
Ridiculous comment, IMO. To "blame Bush" for this is beyond ridiculous. Also, you seem to believe that the votes are in and have been counted as to the House elections. Are you psychic? LOL
Good idea...if nothing else, we have an opportunity to complain to our (lousy) congressmen.
No, the original illegal detention charge is a misdemeanor. Consider the $1300 bail that he paid as the fine for this "crime" and call it good.
Yep. Rice had such promise, but she went over to the State Dept. and turned hard left. Boot her and flush her pension down the john.
Why?
Is not part of his charge to protect Americans?
Do you think that his own daughter would suffer this injustice?
