Eileen Hannay, left, the manager of the Rogers Island Visitor Center, shows part of a cellar to visitors on Aug. 18, 2006, in Fort Edward, N.Y. A five-year-long archaeological project has unearthed the 250-year-old site of a merchant's establishment that sold wine, rum, tobacco and other goods to the thousands of soldiers who passed through this region during the French and Indian War, when Fort Edward was the largest British military post in North America. People bought things in the 1800's?!? The heck you say!
And here I always thought that they were lying to me at Williamsburg.

Who gets to keep all the finds? The owner of the property where it was found, or the archeologist and his students?

Archeologists were surprised to find that one of the items, a package of aspirin, bore a price tag of 76p, the equivalent of nearly $10 in today's currency. They also found part of a broken sign that said "Thank thee. Come again."

not sure on what ownership rights and agreements to display and such will be worked out here,, I'm sure legal beagles are involved and handling that angle of it. Technically,it would probably be under federal control but not sure due to its longstanding military role, albeit British.. I would think it is already a National Heritage or Historic site.

You are correct...and thanks, jocon307, for the ping. I will ping the list, and also remind everyone that Ft Edward plays an important RevWar role as part of the
Jane McCrea story.

With the permission of military officials, sutlers set up shop near a fort's gates, taking advantage of the isolated location to do a brisk trade with off-duty soldiers and officers. They're still around today, you'll see them just across the border from military bases.

Thank you for posting. This area, encompassing Albany, Saratoga, Ft Ann, Ft Edward, Whitehall, Lake George (Ft William Henry), Ft Ticonderoga (Carillon), Bennington as well as the Green Mountains over in Vermont--as you probably know--is doubly interesting because of its connection to the French and Indian War"Last of the Mohicans and to the Revolution.

Thanks! Probably better as a topic for Pharmboy's early America list, but this could be good for the Digest. Thanks again.
