Camo scare puts school in lockdown
The Ottawa Sun ^ | September 21, 2006 | By MELISSA JUERGENSEN

Two Sir Guy Carleton Secondary School students put their school in lockdown yesterday after they showed up wearing camouflage clothing and gas masks.

A resident saw the students walking down Centrepointe Dr. and called police, said school board spokeswoman Hyacinth Haddad.

Police arrived at the scene shortly after 2 p.m.

"They were searched and there were no weapons found," said Const. Steven Desjourdy.

"No criminal charges were laid because the safety of the public was not compromised," he said. "In theory, there's nothing illegal about walking around with a gas mask on."

Haddad said the two students were going through family memorabilia and found some old military uniforms that they decided to show to friends.

"The students had no malicious intent. It was just poor judgment," said Haddad.

SAFETY PRECAUTION

Police notified the school after they received the call and the school was put into lockdown.

Staff and students were told to stay away from the windows and doors.

The school's principal Debra Ford is also looking into the incident.

A student assembly will be held today and a letter will be sent home to parents to explain what happened.

In light of the Dawson College shootings last week, Desjourdy said people are more aware of the need to be vigilant.

"In the past an incident like this might have been presumed a joke, but now the police get a call," said Desjourdy.

It's going to be a difficult Halloween season.

How many trick or treaters does it take to trigger a call up of the National Guard?

Initial reports on this said nothing about gas masks, and I bet nobody saw the masks until after the police got involved. When I was in high school, there was always at least one person in a camo shirt or pants around. This is just nuts, they are scared of clothing.

I went to a military college. Almost everyone wore BDU's.

Shoot, my kids grew up wearing at least bits and pieces of dad's camies, or thrift shop ones. Around here now kids wear them because they hunt.

I guess the gas masks set people off, but this turned out to be just normal boy stuff.
My kids would love gas masks, what they REALLLLY want is night vision goggles! :D

This is spirit week at the highschool where my husband teaches. Yesterday was camo day, you never saw the likes of the amount of camo clothing that those kids had on! Several of them had it from head to toe! And given that this is a rural area, camo is not uncommon dress at school anyway!

Either we don't have all the details or somebody just overreacted, again.

No, dingbat, not in theory but in actuallity there is no law against wearing a gas mask in public.

Oh no, now the school principal is "getting involved" according to this article. Maybe the kids will be shot at sunrise now for daring to wear camo gear and gas masks while walking down the street. Thank goodness they didn't have a squirt gun on them!

Attitudes like that put school officials in an impossible position. I understand that FReepers enjoy bashing schools, but it get old with people trying to have it both ways. They see something out of the ordinary and take action and are criticized. They see something and take no action and they are criticized.

Do you have any idea what you are writing here? Any time I read about stupidity on any persons' part, I feel free to write what I want to. If you don't like it, feel free to write what you want, but leave the personal part out of it. I think the principal is a fool here in this story, and typical of most educators/administrators in education, she has stuck her nose in where it doesn't belong. (looks like the local cops handled it to their satisfaction) Much ado about nothing here, and shows the abject stupidity of all involved.

BTW, I'm not aware that Freepers enjoy bashing schools, and really wonder what motivates folks like you to say so. I think most Freepers like our system, but do not care for all of the b.s. the school administrators are pushing in their agenda-driven policies.

You are correct, there is a great deal of stupidity on any thread involving a school. Of course a Principal is going to "get involved" when police call a school with information that puts it in a lock-down mode. It's stupid to suggest otherwise.

As for as your suggestion as that FReepers don't enjoy bashing schools, well, that just reinforces the point that you don't have clue.

Remember October 31, 2001? How everybody thought the terrorists were going to hit us while all the kiddies were out trick-or-treating? I live in suburban NJ, and folks were really paranoid.

The houses of people who had lost people on 9/11 were all open and the widowed woman down the block had her two little twins out in their costumes. We all went out, because we couldn't imagine not doing so.

Needless to say, it all turned out OK.
