Bush: ‘If it’s About Christianity vs. Islam, We’ll Lose’
Outside the Beltway ^ | 9/18/06 | James Joyner

Posted on 09/19/2006 1:42:14 AM PDT by LibWhacker

President Bush told a group of radio talk show hosts that the war on terror must be framed in terms of values, not religion.

Coulter found herself in the uncharacteristic position of being upstaged by her introducer, Mike Gallagher. He told the audience he was fresh back from an hour-and-45-minute session which President Bush held in the Oval Office Friday afternoon with him and four other conservative talk show hosts: Atlanta’s Neal Boortz, Laura Ingraham, Sean Hannity and Michael Medved. Rush Limbaugh couldn’t make it, he said.

Though he said this session was supposed to be off the record, Gallagher described it at some length, including Bush’s observation to the right-wing radio jocks that the War on Terror has to be about right versus wrong, “because if it’s about Christianity versus Islam, we’ll lose.”

“Remind me never to invite you to an off-the-record session,” Coulter said after his introduction.

Indeed.

Still, if Bush said what Gallagher said he did, he’s right. Islam is, of course, a big piece of the puzzle. But the battle over ideas has to be fought by finding common moral ground, not bashing Islam in general.

It’s no small irony that this was revealed while introducing, Ann “invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity” Coulter.

What a creep. Off the record and straight out of the box, he goes on air and starts repeating it.

A lot of respect shown there.

"Though he said this session was supposed to be off the record, Gallagher described it at some length ..."

That doesn't give the perception of being untrustable, does it? Good example of someone starving for personal attention at another person's expense.

Wow, that reduces it to its essence, right vs wrong.

Bush sure has a way of cutting to the core of the matter.

Terrorism is wrong. Plain and simple.

Who is idiot Gallagher, looks like Bush showed poor judgement in trusting him when the fellow betrays him less than 24 hours after making a promise

Christians don't lose to Muslim attacks in the free exchange of ideas.

When real Christians fight Muslims, it is because of Muslim aggression and violence. To the Muslim, it is about carrying out the mandate of the Koran. To the Christian, or Jew, or any other, it is about the duty of a human being to defend one's family and nation from tyranny.

Christians will fulfill the Great Commission through "telling the truth in love."

If President Bush said that, he's wrong. It is about Islam, a primitive, barbaric religion. And that guy Mo' was a freak, too.

It’s Political Corruption, the war is with ISLAM, or the Crusades part 2. If Bush said this, then we have lost and he is an idiot. For if you can not define the enemy, then you can not fight him.

Political correctness is communist propaganda writ small. In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, nor to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is to co-operate with evil, and in some small way to become evil oneself. One’s standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to.

Wanna bet that's the last time he sees the inside of the Oval Office in Bush's term? If not we can assume that this was a statement flagged as ok to mention.

Mike Gallagher reminds me of Richard Armitage, a blabbermouth, trying to jusify his importance. What does 'off the record' mean to this jerk?

Well, I'd suppose it'd be a harder War for some to support.
Better to stay focused on doing what's right.

"the war on terror must be framed in terms of values, not religion."

And "values" are based on what???

If this thing eventually snowballs into the conflict that it could become, the West is going to need to marshal every available resource to win it - including it's Christian heritage.

The idea that secular, democratic consumerism can beat radical Islam is, naive at best. Western Muslims are, in many cases, more radical than their 3rd world counterparts

Maybe Gallagher can begin talking about behind the scenes at FNN next?? He's made it known he's not to be trusted, so the possibility is out there ...

Bush didn't say that it's not about Islam. He said this and only this:

“because if it’s about Christianity versus Islam, we’ll lose.”

For those who aren't aware, we have Jews, Hindus, Shintos, Muslims, atheists and assorted others on our side against the islamofascists- people of many descriptions who want to worship freely and permit others to do the same. If we alienate those Iraqis and Iranians on our side by giving Ahmaddogonjihad what he wants- a holy war- then our side will become broken and fractured- we will not win.

While we're marshalling our Christian heritage we'd better not drive off nonchristian allies.

The jews had the good sense to appreciate Cyrus's reign instead of opposing him because he wasn't Jewish.

Maybe, but I think W is right to frame it as a contest of values.

Last night on Fox and on other cable stations, too, the argument seemed to be that Islam is at war with itself. We're not to inflame the extremists in any way. O'Reilly had on a Muslim spokesman who mentioned the fact that there are more than a billion Muslims (implied threat), and he was a moderate.
