How Many Divisions Does The NY Times Have? Grey Lady Demands Apology From Pope

In a surreal clash of the sacred and the profane, the New York Times - that citadel of secularism - has declared in its editorial of this morning that Pope Benedict "needs to offer a deep and persuasive apology," for having quoted a 14th century Christian emperor who said:

“Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.”

The Times is only being fair and balanced, I suppose. After all, hardly a week goes by that you can't pick up the paper and read an editorial condemning this or that mullah, imam or ayatollah for the latest fatwa ordering the death of such-and-such infidel or the destruction of entire countries found to be an annoyance. Or not.

But the Times suddenly gets religion, if they'll excuse the expresssion, when it comes to the Pope. Oh well. At least there's one hopeful sign in all this. It was of course Stalin who dismissively asked how many divisions the Pope had. By its editorial according great weight to the words of the Pontiff, the Times would appear to be breaking with Uncle Joe. Might this be the start of a hopeful trend?

I am not Catholic, and I am not a fan of the Pope, but it is beyond any reason that he should even think about apologizing for telling the truth.

I am sure that that he meant what he said and it would be hypocritial to say that he was sorry!

Three cheers for the inevitable downfall of the old gray lady and the MSM. Free market, gotta love it! They are all digging their own graves. I'm impatient for the funerals and plan on attending with bells on.

I'm sure that some Muslim leader will be demanding that the Pope convert to Islam or face the consequences shortly if they haven't already.

Their grasp of the pope's power to persuade is sadly lacking.

That's funny... the New York Times demanding the Pope apologize?

And when will they apologize for putting America in danger for their public disclosure of sensitive intelligence on terrorist activities?

Screw em.

About six months ago, the Pope had been asked if Islam could have its own enlightenment and become more moderate (as the West would understand it). The Pope responded that no it could not, as the barriers were structural. I don't recall that this got as much media attention but it's significant; this is part of the reason that the European community in general has had more harsh words for the US than the terrorists and their sponsors-- because they believe that there will be a Reformation. The Pope was responding that he disagreed with that view and I think that he is correct.

To prove just how wrong the Pope was about Islam being a religion of violence, protestors in the Palestinian Territories . . . set two churches on fire yesterday.

I think your statement goes too far. Benedict XVI was not being critical of Islam. He was merely quoting someone who was. Muslims can't seem to get that right. Benedict XVI has nothing to apologize for, but he might say that he is sorry that so many Muslims were offended (without ever saying that he did anything to offend them).

The grey lady is a washed up old lying presstitute -- the Pope owes her absolutely NOTHING.
