Man Charged After Trying to Board Yemen-Bound Plane With Knife

A man was jailed on $500,000 bail Saturday after authorities alleged he tried to board a plane bound for his native Yemen with a knife hidden in a book.

Mohammed Ghanem, 21, of Hamtramck, was arrested Thursday at Detroit Metropolitan Airport after Transportation Security Administration officers detected the knife "artfully concealed" in the book, airport spokesman Michael Conway said.

I hate it when that happens. Just minding my own business reading a book and bam, a knife pops out...

No doubt in my mind. This was either an averted terrorist attack today or more likely in my opinion, a sacrificial dry run to probe security for a larger attack on 9-11-06.

I'd be interested to know if it was an ordinary metal knife, which would be pretty easy to detect with simple airport sensors, or some other kind.

I'd think even an ignorant terrorist would know that you can't carry metal through metal detectors.

Hijacking aircraft with knives isn't going to work again. It worked on Sept. 11th because the rule at the time was not to resist. Today the passengers would fight back and overwhelm the terrorists just as those brave souls on Untied-93 did.

The terrorists are evil but they're not stupid. They know this too which is why we haven't seen hijacking attempts since Sept. 11th.
