What Bush Should Have Said
Time/CNN ^ | Sunday, Sep. 03, 2006 | Joe Klein

Posted on 09/03/2006 2:40:24 PM PDT by woofie

My fellow members of the American Legion, I have made some serious mistakes and miscalculations in our struggle against Islamic extremism over the past five years. Some of these were made out of anger and impatience in the months after we were so viciously attacked on Sept. 11, 2001. Others were made out of my heartfelt belief that our American values—freedom, democracy, market economics—are the surest path away from the fury and despair that have plagued the nations at the heart of the Islamic world. I still believe deeply in those values.

I am still convinced that we are facing a long-term campaign against Islamic extremists who have the means to bring unimaginable horrors to our streets. But events in Lebanon and Iraq this summer have convinced me that our Freedom Agenda must be modified.

I was going to deliver a speech today in which I said, "The war we fight today is more than a military conflict. It is the decisive ideological struggle of the 21st century." But then I thought about a conversation I had recently with a young U.S. military officer, a combat veteran of the Iraq war who remains on active duty, committed to our mission. "Mr. President," he said. "If this struggle is so important, why is this the only war in American history where we haven't increased the size of the Army and raised taxes to pay for it? Why haven't you mobilized the nation?"

The guy is not mentioning that Bush raised revenue to help pay for the war by lowering taxes. We maybe should have cut entitlements some to help too.

As to rallying the country to the cause 51% of the Democrats actively do not want the president to succeed.Where does Mr. Klien stand on the cause.

And recent events concerning the UN, Iran and Lebanon put paid to the notion that the UN and the IAEA could have had any good effect on Iraq.

We should have had more patience with it and supported it more fully. In the end, it would have revealed what we now know: that Saddam had no weapons of mass destruction. That revelation would have destroyed the dictator's credibility. His brutal regime might have toppled from within.

This guy is delusional--collapsed from within YEAH RIGHT

And just what does he think Saddam would have been doing in the years since then if we hadn't invaded

And what if we have to move against Iran .What base would we use

How about:

"One hour ago we launched cruise missiles at Tehran, destroying the Iranian government building while Ahmedinejad was briefing the entire hard-line cleric assembly. There were no survivors. Simultaneously, similar attacks were launched against Syria, North Korea, Cuba, and Venezuela. The leadership commands of these countries have been terminated with extreme prejudice."

"While we were at it, we took out the New York Times and the Washington Post, CBS News, the ACLU, and the NEA - both of them. Oh, yeah, we took down France, too."

"Further, we now have in custody the Clinton Gang, Nancy Pelosi, Tim Russert, John F'n Kerry, and the Dixie Chicks. They won't be a problem anymore."

"Thank you very much - and may God bless America."

We should have had more patience with it and supported it more fully. In the end, it would have revealed what we now know: that Saddam had no weapons of mass destruction.

Why would the President say this, since it's not true. He had them, he had used them earlier, and we found some of the ones he had supposedly destroyed. Did he have a nuclear weapon? No, but the President never said he did. We strongly suspect, and the President probably knows, that many were spirited out of the country in the months and weeks before the invasion, while we gave the sanctions a chance, and then while we gave diplomacy a chance.

The only worthwhile observation I found in the article was:

"why is this the only war in American history where we haven't increased the size of the Army"

A good question, whose answer probably lies in Republican tax cutting and Democrat passed "entitlements" spending.

Hey Joe Kelin,

When was the last time your paymasters Bill and Hillary Clinton admitted to any error?

Your are a idiot studying to be a moron and failing. The was not one factually correct, intellectually honest point in your whole screed. In fact you KNOWINGLY lie in a couple of places in your desperation to whitewash the total failure of your master to take any significant steps to address the growing problem of Islamic Fascism. You just skip right OVER the fact that Your master Bill Clinton and his regime brought forth the VERY WMD intelligence YOU claim Bush lied about.

Fanaticism, Fraud and Foolishness. The mark of every Clintonite article published in Lie.

None because the Republican bill was passed and implemented and the expand army is currently being trained.

I guess you missed the fact that the lie from Klein's post about the Army Officer is an act of literary licenses. It never actually happened. It is a stylistic creation used by Leftist propagandists to assign their wacko Leftist political dogma coming out of the mouths of fictional characters. They hope such fraudulent styling will give their propaganda credibility.

Because it is a lie. The US army has been expanded. Guess Klein missed that. Congress passed the bill either last year or the year before. By the end of 2007 the US Army will field 43 Combat Brigades. The Army Bush got from Joe Kelin's master Bill Clinton consisted of 35 Brigades. And Half of which were Reserve and National Guard part time units.

The guy is not mentioning that Bush raised revenue to help pay for the war by lowering taxes

And by cutting the other services to pay for the "boots on the ground". Plus cutting training, R&D, purchase of spares for equipment not headed for deployment or already deployed. Some Army bases haven't been able to pay their utility bills. They have let go the contractors that provide services that were once supplied by either civil servants or junior enlisted personnel. So the latrines aren't being cleaned (as often, once a week rather than every day for example), the brush isn't being cut back, and so on and so forth.

Because the DEMONrats dont believe the War on Terror is really a WAR.

But they don't control Congress, although when you add in the RINOs they are able to block alot of needed stuff, and pass a lot of cr@p. That said, Bush hasn't asked for more spending or a larger military. Its cheaper to call up reservists, involuntarily reactivate recently folks who recently left active duty for the IRR, and so forth. It's also faster, and if you didn't anticipate the need for those troops enough in advance to get them trained, faster may indeed be a "Good Thing".

Still, I feel compelled to write my whackadoo dogma or I won't get paid and the other members of the pundit class won't invite me to their cocktail parties.

As a journalist I belong to a guild along with all the rest of journalism. I don't question the objectivity of any other journalist, and no other journalist questions my objectivity on pain of expulsion from the guild. That prevents flame wars among journalists which would destroy the image of journalism as being not merely important but the one important thing in American political life. So long as we maintain the guild, no journalist ever suffers negative PR. That positions us all as being superior to everyone who is not a journalist.

Of course that does not mean that you have to become an actual journalist to get the PR benefit of membership - not at all. Without becoming a journalist you cannot have access to unquestioned status of being considered objective, but you can have assurance that you will never be labeled "extreme" or part of a "wing," either left or right. To have that assurance it is only necessary that you restrict your public speech to topics which are congenial to journalism and to the idea that journalism and its topics are preeminently important, and you will be labeled with any positive label you want, other than "objective."

The label "liberal" is yours if you want it, and it served many such people well over many generations going back so long that the memory of man probably does not run to the contrary. Precisely for that reason, however, the term "liberal" is now associated not with its original meaning of supporting liberty but with the perspective that talk is superior to action which is congenial to the industry of nothing but talk, journalism.

But of course we journalists can never run out of words, and there are plenty of other labels you may like. "Moderate" is an excellent choice; in fact moderation is a classical virtue. And "Progressive" is another favorite since like liberty all Americans favor progress (and any disagreements as to what constitutes progress need not be discussed).

And of course if you are reliably in favor of the primacy of talk over action, nothing prevents you from electing to find a position in journalism and acquire the label "objective" (while shedding your "liberal"/"moderate"/"progressive" positioning for the duration of your journalism gig. No one who refuses the requirements for "liberal"/"moderate"/"progressive" labeling, of course, can ever be anything but a peripheral player in journalism and can never acquire the label "objective."

Why Broadcast Journalism is
Unnecessary and Illegitimate

You probably don't realize this, but the the new Combat Brigades are replacing the old brigades, which were components of a division, and aren't exactly the same size. The U.S. Army is still roughly the same size it was under Clinton, but administratively it's being reformed into different sized units.

Bush should have had Condi accompany him on the piano while he sang my favorite song.

No one likes us
I don't know why.
We may not be perfect,
But heaven knows we try.
But all around
even our old friends put us down
Let's drop the big one
And see what happens.

We give them money,
But are they grateful?
No, they're spiteful, and they're hateful.
They don't respect us, so let's surprise them
We'll drop the big one and pulverize them.

Asia's crowded, Europe's too old,
Africa is far too hot, and Canada's too cold.
And South America stole our name
Let's drop the big one,
There'll be no one left to blame us.

We'll save Australia, don't want to hurt no kangaroos.
We'll build an American amusement park there,
They got surfin' too!

Boom! goes London, Boom! Paree
More room for you and more room for me.
And every city the whole world round,
Will just be another American town.

Oh, how peaceful it'll be!
We'll set everybody free!
You'll wear a Japanese kimono, baby
And there'll be Italian shoes for me!
They all hate us anyhow
So let's drop the big one now,
Let's drop the big one now!

Aside from the correction, which I applied, what's wrong with this sentiment?

Nothing! It's a question I've pondered often and addressed to both the White House and members of Congress following the attacks of 9-11 and before our war with Iraq. War bonds and stamps would have allowed citizens to voluntarily support the war efforts. Both Congress and the White House dismissed this avenue of financing.

Something you have probably witnessed firsthand is that all critics of President Bush's handling of the War on Terrorism and the Iraq War are cast as liberals, Democrats, or supporters of terrorism themselves. The truth is many of the critics are far to the political right, and much more hawkish than President Bush.

The fallacy that limited warfare against the leadership and military of a hostile nation on their soil can change the essence of leadership and military the belligerent nation produced has been shattered in this war. Saddam Hussein was the product of the entire nation of Iraq. Every region and segment of the population played a role in his government and military. Cut off one despicable head and another will soon appear from the body of the Iraqi people.

Our high tech limited warfare makes great television footage, but it cannot hope to achieve changing the nature of an entire population.

If this be war, then our politicians must release the restraints from our military so victory can be achieved as quickly as possible and with the least causalities to our military. And never can the leader of any nation hope to win a foreign war where he has failed to involve his own people.

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/ops/global-deployments.htm The Army intends to increase the number of Active Component brigades from 33 to 43 by fiscal year 2007; at that time, the Army will decide whether to continue the process to achieve 48 brigades. During the same time period, Army National Guard Brigades will reorganize into 34 brigade-size units using the same modular design as the Active Component.
