An Israeli Cabinet meeting has authorised a commission of inquiry into the failures of the war with Hezbollah.
Defence Minister Amir Peretz says Israel will examine the mistakes it made during the month-long offensive.
A government official briefing reporters on the weekly Cabinet meeting quoted Mr Peretz as saying everything would be put on the table at the inquiry because it was a duty to prepare for the next round.
He said Israel would prevent the Lebanese Army from deploying within two kilometres of the border before the multinational peacekeeping force was in place.
The Lebanese Army has already deployed at several points along the border but a military spokeswoman later clarified the Minister's statement, saying he was referring to those border posts currently still under Israeli control.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military chief says the war was a victory, but not a knock-out.
General Dan Halutz told the meeting the Army would investigate everything that happened during the war.
"We have nothing to hide," he said.
The military chief has been under pressure in recent weeks, not only over his failure to effectively neutralise Hezbollah, but also for his decision to sell off his stock portfolio just hours before ordering the attack on Lebanon.
It was Olmert worrying about casualties rather than overrunning everything south of the Litani the second the kidnappings happened.
DING DING DING! We have a winner! No more calls please!
He had more of a spine dealing with Jewish teens than he did with the Arab Muslims.
COWARD!!
I think the biggest mistake was not going full bore at the start. Israel knows that the battle time will be limited and not attacking on the ground along with in the air wasted time.
Mistake #1: Electing leftists.
Mistake #2: Letting leftists investigate themselves.
Fighting a PC war, big mistake!
Electing Olmert as PM and letting his so-called Kadima party have any power was the biggest war mistake and that blame rests on all the Israeli's naive enough to elect them.

First was having a liberal leader.
( No more Olmert! No more Kadima! No more Oslo!)
second was a defense minister, Peretz, who was a union leader with scant military experience.
You are so right. We have been rocked to sleep by liberals in our press and our government. It is just like the days of Winston Churchill in the 1930's only on a bigger scale. We are told they Israel can not defend itself because it lost the PR war. What a bunch of crap.
