Also, I given up on Putin. I don't think he likes the U.S. Every time we hold extend a hand to him, he slaps it away. I think he's still looking for revenge for losing the Cold War. That's why he keeps cozying up to the Chinese and Iranians. Both of these are future problems for Russia big time, especially the Chinese, but he's trying to put together an anti-U.S. coalition.

He leaves office in 2008, and hopefully his successor will not be riding that particular hobby horse.

If a grandmother had a different anatomy, she would be a grandfather. Putin and his putinoids have the fundamental commonality [spiritual and civilizational kinship] with other despotisms - islamic or not, from China and North Korea to all those irans, cubas, venezuelas and zimbabwes. They still could have squabbles now and then in that "international of despots", but to hope for him to pull out of it and "support USA in Iraq" is utterly unrealistic. Its way past time for that, but Russia still has not recovered from losing its oil field option money , never to be recovered, (30 million?), when Saddam's government fell.

Having Russia aboard would be like having France , they would start a 5th colunm dedicated to the formation of a socilist state in Iraq, out of the Sunnis, Kurds or Shia.
