A STATEMENT FROM THE GOVERNOR -- June 22, 2006

The following is a statement from Governor Tim Pawlenty regarding the full-page ad in today’s Star Tribune from the “Growth & Justice” think tank calling for a $2 billion per year tax increase.

“After decades of struggle, we are proud to have moved Minnesota out of the top ten in taxes. We now have budget surpluses and double digit revenue growth to the state. We are not undertaxed and will be able to fund our key priorities like education without raising taxes.

“Having read the names of those who signed the full-page ad in today’s Star Tribune, I want to issue them a friendly challenge. I invite the people on the list to send in a voluntary contribution to the state, above and beyond the taxes they already pay, of $250,000 to $2 million each.

“Since their contributions will be public information under our Data Practices Act, we will look into listing the names of these generous Minnesotans on a state website. I will also personally pose with each of them for a commemorative photo in the Governor’s Reception Room accepting their contribution and issue them a certificate of appreciation. I look forward to the state receiving checks from each of these 203 individuals.”

Under Minnesota Statutes 16A.013 and 16A.014, the Department of Finance is authorized to accept contributions of this type. Checks should be made payable to “State of Minnesota” and sent to:

Minnesota Department of Finance 400 Centennial Office Building 658 Cedar Street St. Paul, MN 55155

Hmmm curious. Since this "Happy to Pay" more crowd is all gung ho to give more of THEIR money to the State why are they wasting it on high price Junk Media ads. Have each of them write a 100,000 check to the State of Minnesota instead.

The reason is clear. They need YOUR money to fund trains and casinos and football and baseball and gopher stadiums. THEY don't want to pay more because there are not enough of them to fund all the various Socialist Utopian dreams they have. They merely think if they SAY the will pay more all us working class slobs will fall all over ourselves to vote for them.

Sorry Democrats activists pretending to be "Concern Citizens" if you want to give the Govt more GO AHEAD, but use your OWN money this time. We are not buying the scam again. Pawlenty in a landslide.

Oh God I love this!!!

Every time some moron at work gripes about Bush's tax cut, I always reply "Well if you think we should pay more taxes, how much have you been sending in on your own?" That usually instantly stops the nonsense talk. Once in a while I'll get a response of "Well, I will when it's the law" and my response is "Oh, so you need a gun to your head to make you do what you think is morally right?".

Excellent response to the Left wing socialists. Ram it right back down there throats.

We need more creative responses to the left like this.

Wonder if that tiresome windbag Garrison Keillor was among the signers? With all the dough he's made off Minnesotans, he should fork it over.

Typical wealthy liberals. Expect to hear crickets chirping in response to this. I'm glad someone had the guts to call the socialists out on this.

Our Governor did that also, but by appearances he didn't really mean it.

I think Pawlenty has done one or two things that made me scratch my head, He CAN'T be faulted on taxes, and I s'pect he won't be having any of these pictures taken any time soon. The rules are meant for other people, not limosine liberals.

Taxes are for the little guys, who can't take advantage of all the loopholes the trained legislative poodles of the truly rich have put in place so they can posture like this, while keeping their own pockets bulging.

The governor's retort is on the mark.
