The United States and the European Union are united in agreement on the subject
of Iran and its nuclear policy. A conditional offer of compromise and incentives was offered to Tehran on June 6th by the permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany. On Monday the US President once again invoked the possibility of sanctions if Iran did not end its programme of uranium enrichment.
But Iran said yesterday that as yet, no decision on the dossier of incentives has been made But the issue of the US detention camp at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba is another matter. Bush is likely to face pressure from EU representatives, prompted by human rights experts, to close the prison which holds hundreds of terrorist suspects.
He has so far fended off calls for its closure by saying he is waiting for a US Supreme Court decision about the forum for handling detainee cases, due by the end of June. There is also a new challenge posed by North Korea.
The country's apparent preparation for a test launch of a missile capable of reaching the United States has prompted international concern. The US has said such a test would be a provocative act on the part of Pyongyang that Washington would take seriously.
I wonder if the EU will allow us to give each of the inmates at Gitmo a gun and a bomb, and let them loose in every capital city in Europe...
If they object to having these men run around armed, they shouldn't object to keeping them disarmed and detained.
The mice are all agreed. The cat must wear a bell.
What's Europe gonna do? Write a letter to NK? Sorry, but Europe couldn't fight it's way out of a wet paper bag. It's useless as far as protecting itself.
If that is the case just ask your President to ask our politicians to pull our useless millitary out of Afghanistan, the Balkans and the Middle East. I am sure that our politicians are happy to comply since most of this BS down there is not our business anyway.
Greetings from Lake Constance/Germany - very old Europe...
Europe has more experience of fighting wars than America.
Two of the most destructive wars ever fought were fought by Europeans on European soil.
And as a Brit with over 18 years experience a lot of that in combat zones I can definitely fight my way out of a paper bag.
Can you.
With regimes like Iran, diplomacy is becoming a check-box that needs to be covered before taking action. So the question remains, if Iran does not accept the package of carrots and sticks, will the E.U. say: "Diplomacy has run its course. It's time for action. (sanctions, embargo, military action). I'm assuming China won't. Russia's decision is anybody's guess.
