List of Al Qaeda or terrorist attacks?

Posted on 06/21/2006 1:27:32 PM PDT by Spokane

Does anyone have a source to a list of worldwide attacks attributed to Alqaeda or other terrorist groups?

I have a debate going with someone who feels that the US "deserved" 911. I'd like to run down a list, one by one, of terrorist attacks around the world to find whether they feel that they were also deserved, or whether they are biased against the US.

You're arguing a false premise. The people attacked on 9/11 were private individuals. Even if you buy into the notion that our leaders were somehow culpable for atrocities against muslims abroad, (and only an idiot would advance such an argument) that in no way justifies attacking innocent men, women and children.

Nobody "deserves" a 9/11

Why debate?...just punch him in the face the next time he says we deserved 911.

It's one thing to debate with a liberal (or other mentally challenged person) how we ought to respond, plan and pay for security against terrorism. It's another thing altogether to even converse with anyone who believes this country DESERVED 9/11.

I guess I wonder why you would even have a conversation with a person who thinks the United States in any way "deserved" this attack.

Lod Airport (Israel) Massacre. May 30, 1972.

On May 30, 1972 three members of the Japanese Red Army undertook a terrorist attack at Lod Airport in Tel Aviv on behalf of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

Because airport security was focused on the possibility of a Palestinian attack, the use of Japanese terrorists took guards by surprise, and the commitment to a suicide mission simplified planning.

Kozo Okamoto, Tsuyoshi Okudaira, and Yasuyuki Yasuda had been trained at Baalbek, Lebanon. They arrived at the airport aboard an Air France flight from Paris. Dressed conservatively and carrying slim cases they attracted little attention. Entering the waiting area, they produced automatic firearms from their cases and began to fire indiscriminately at airport staff and visitors. The trio quickly expended their ammunition and grenades and then either committed suicide or fell under the fire of airport security staff. They killed twenty-four people and injured seventy-eight others. The victims included twenty Christian pilgrims from Puerto Rico, and professor Aharon Katzir, an internationally renowned protein biophysicist, whose brother, Ephraim Katzir, would be elected President of Israel the following year. Yasuda and Okudaira died at the scene, Yasuda from Israeli fire and Okudaira by his own hand - he had moved from the airport building onto the landing area, after firing at passengers disembarking from an El Al aircraft and committed suicide using a grenade. Okamoto was severely injured but survived to be tried and sentenced to life imprisonment in June 1972.

In the letter claiming official responsibility for the attack carried out by the Japanese Red Army, the PFLP referred to it as Operation Deir Yassin. This was to portray it as revenge for the 1948 Deir Yassin massacre by Jewish Irgun members on Palestinian civilians in the Deir Yassin village. The letter also stated that the operation was carried out by the Squad of the Martyr Patrick Arguello. Patrick Arguello had been shot and killed two years earlier, on September 6, 1970 on an Israeli El Al jet he had attempted to hijack together with PFLP member Leila Khaled.

Okamoto was released in 1985 with over a thousand other prisoners in an exchange for captured Israeli soldiers. He settled in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley. He was arrested in 1997 but in 2000 was granted political refugee status in Lebanon. Four other JRA members arrested at the same time were extradited to Japan.

Your lists are fine, but the problem exists that Al Qaida is just one of the Islamist-Salafist-Jihadist terrorist groups that work in cooperation with one another, and have done so for the last twenty years. There is Al Qaida, Egyptian Islamic Jihad, Palestine Islamic Jihad, Gamaat al-Islamiya, a plethora of Algerian groups, Hamas, Abu Sayyaf, Ogaden Islamic Union, Jammah Islamiyya in Indonedsia, Malaysia and Thailand, etc., etc., etc. The Department of the Treasury has listed the terrorist organizations.

In the early 1990s, when their situation couldn't have been better, the many organizatons met at the Popular Arab and Islamic Conference meetings held in Khartoum. Since the last meeting held in 1995 no-one has able to bring together the various terrorist threads, although both Saddam Hussein and the Iranian government tried.

Thanks to everyone who replied. These lists were exactly what I was looking for. The long list of attacks reminded me of the speech that Tony Blair made in front of Congress in 2003.

"Members of Congress, I feel a most urgent sense of mission about today's world. September 11 was not an isolated event, but a tragic prologue, Iraq another act, and many further struggles will be set upon this stage before it's over." ...

"I know out there there's a guy getting on with his life, perfectly happily, minding his own business, saying to you, the political leaders of this country, "Why me? And why us? And why America?" And the only answer is, "Because destiny put you in this place in history, in this moment in time, and the task is yours to do."
