New York: More VLTs For Smokers at Batavia Downs
cnn.com ^ | 6/2/2006

Posted on 06/03/2006 6:00:41 PM PDT by SheLion

The owners of Batavia Downs say they are going to move ahead with plans to put 50 video lottery terminals (VLTs) in a new smoking room.

Right now, Batavia Downs does have a room where patrons can legally smoke. That room has 18 VLTs.

The plan is to create a larger room with fifty terminals, because those “smoking” terminals get twice the play of others at the track.

The project still needs approval from state lottery officials.

Is this something you're proud of? It's hardly an image-enhancer for smokers.

It's not about image enhancement, it's about business.

This is an old time racetrack, it draws smokers. Simple.

Umm, I am. And I don't even live near the place.

It's always a good thing when smokers are actually treated like human beings for a change.

Not proud.  Just happy that the owners recognize that it will be in their best interest to expand the smoking room with more terminals.  And they won't be sorry!

Something must have prompted them to do this.  Otherwise, if smokers weren't in such a demand, they never would have this in the works.

It's too bad that the tobaccophobic's hopes of us all going broke due to the taxes on cigs didn't pan out. We can actually afford things like this.
Last I remember, we were choosing buying smokes over our kids food, or something.

What prompted them is that this is an old time track-it draws a lots of "old timers" from the Rochester and Buffalo area

Upstate NY has it's liberal stupidity, but in areas like Batavia, many times it's a throwback to earlier times.

I don't see it as proud or not proud - its adults making a lifestyle choice and doing it in a way that doesn't hurt others - its natural the market would respond to this - we are a capitalist society.

I agree it's good that the business is even allowed to do this, but video lottery is hardly something with which I'd want to be associated in any way.

Well then, your solution is simple - don't participate in either activity, and don't tell those who do not to do so.

Then it's a darn good thing no one is forcing you to associate with them.

Well, come to think of it you are associated with it actually. No doubt there's tax money being collected there which is doled out ostensibly for your 'benefit'.

It's filthy lucre no doubt, but what the hell....lucre is lucre.

It's no poorer an image enhancer than a seedy bar that forbids smoking.

Would you say that a non-smoker in a seedy bar needs image enhancing?

Grow up !

Absolutely. The main issue isn't the smoking/non-smoking; it's the other undesirable behavior in which the subject is engaged.

Hey! Gambling and casino's aren't MY cup of tea either but at least they are smoker friendly.  And because of that, I commend them!

At least if I ever go there, I can go in, have a cup of coffee and a cigarette.  That alone prompts a draw.  As for gambling............not for me.

And just like the bath houses in San Fran.........you don't like them!  STAY OUT just as "I" would!!!!  LOL

Hah, I don't like gambling, but I wouldn't go that far in a comparison.

Same thing!  If you don't like or believe in it, STAY OUT! Simple as that.  If we don't like something, we don't spend our money there.  How hard is that!
