Bump..
Question for the day spurred by a comment by LibertyLee yesterday.
Why is President Bush taking a 'balanced' approach to immigration instead of the hard nose, lock-em up, ship-em back, line up the tanks approach?
Two words- Hugo Chavez.
Ever since LL brought up Hugo Chavez, I've been doing some research and he is really on to something. Chavez has been courting Mexico for a few years now and really would like to bring them in under his fold.
The money we 'loose' with all the illegal immigration is probably pocket change in comparison to what would be needed if Mexico becomes a communist country financed and armed by China and Venezuela.

According to what I have been hearing, the Chavez backed candidate in Mexico is waxing in popularity, and is far behind the Mexican/Californian El Presidente Fox.

The prospect of continuing to have illegals come over doing menial jobs and keeping good relations with Mexico- the status quo for the past century, seems a lot better than dealing with an armed, Communist Mexico. Especially if we can influence Mexico to improve their security.
It is almost like the Dubai Ports deal.. a lot of folks quickly dismissed it because they were 'Arabs', but as we found out later from Chertoff, we missed a huge opportunity to improve security by letting that deal be killed.

But it shows he is attempting to get his hands into their system. If we didn't have US influence in Mexico, the country could be easily tempted to go with Chavez.
BTW, love the tag line..

Here. And disgusted by the invasion of America - without any clear acknowledgment by the feds that this is a serious invasion...and not just our poor neighbors looking for work.

After you mentioned it I started making some phone calls to some influential people whom I cannot mention, who couldn't say much other than 'I'm glad someone is starting to head down the right path'..
This conformation led me to check on all the visits and attempts at influence in Mexico politics by Chavez and Chinese officials (the latter was suggested I look at by unnamed official) and it is pretty disturbing..
I'm gathering some research and will blog/post it when done.. maybe this weekend.. In the mean time, I am trying to steer immigration threads to look into this for more eyes considering this factor.
