Harris Comments on Bense Announcement

Florida House Speaker Allan Bense announced today that he will not challenge U.S. Representative Katherine Harris in the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate.

According to an Associated Press account, Bense said, "I have been extremely honored and humbled by the strong support and encouragement I have received from my family, my friends, and from people across Florida who I admire greatly, however, I have decided not to run for the United States Senate."

"I respect Allan Bense's decision and appreciate his noble service to Florida. Allan has been a friend over the years, and I look forward to working with him in the future to win in November," said Harris in a statement Wednesday.

"Our campaign is focused on defeating liberal Bill Nelson. My candidacy is about being a fighter and a strong independent advocate for Florida. People are tired of politics as usual. They are tired of backroom beltway deals. They are tired of partisan politics. While I am a proud and loyal Republican, ultimately, when I cast a vote I always ask, is it the right vote for the people of my state and our nation - as opposed to a partisan game?"

Stanley Tate, Harris Campaign Finance Chair said, "People who know her, know Katherine Harris doesn't quit. She sticks to her guns and she will win in November with your support."

Is Porter Goss getting ready to pop out?

Will this be the last crater in the road for Harris, or will the bombs keep falling until November?

If one didn't know better, one would believe incumbent Sen. Nelson is running stunning re-election campaign using Republican operatives.

Good insight. Goss may be the administration front man to take Harris out.

What is with the administration's objection to Harris? Is she not liberal enough?

Like everyone I applaud her for standing following the law in 2000. She was also smeared by the Democrats and their media. However, she doesn't have a chance of winning so that's one more seat in the Senate for the Democrats.

I believe there are many scandals around Harris and the administration is convinced that she cannot win (me too). With a limited number of Senate seats in play, the administration doesn't want to just concede this loss to the Democrats in Florida. It's a lot more important than just "give 'em hell, Kathleen".

Last night on Hume's show all the panel was sooooooo smug about Katherine's chances. "She will bring out Democrats" and "Her campaign is in a shambles."
These jerks don't realize that the main damage to Harris and thus her chances was sent her way by Rove and the guys in the beltway. They are being too smart by half.
This notion that people in Florida will remember 2000 and hold it against Harris is very doubtful. Let one "expert" explain how this factor did NOT appear in 2002 but now with hundreds of thousands of new people in Florida and America's short political memory, this factor WILL appear SIX YEARS later.
The wooden Indian is one of the most out of step with his state liberals in America. Harris has not had a day of peace to go after nelson. She has not had a chance to show Florida what a wild eyed radical liberal he is. He is more liberal than many of the biggest liberals in the rat's pack. Go Katherine fight them all and don't look back.

If one were to watch Special Report last night, one would come away thinking Harris needs to quit now and just let Nelson run unopposed. I don't know why the "experts" think her chances are so impossible. How did she win the House seat in the first place? Is it all that impossible that she can win a senate seat? I am not a "Katherine Harris has no chance" person. I am an optimist. I also have faith that she may turn those poll numbers around over the summer. She might be able to pull off the upset of upsets come the first Tuesday of November.

She should HIT HARD on immigration and the federal marriage amendment.

Nelson is a democrat who votes democrat, he has to be shown a crackpot.

Perhaps she should specifically say "I am not a Rino."

Yes I saw the panel on Special Report last night. Yes they were pretty smug about her chances. I've known that panel to be right more than they are wrong. Can you fill me in on some of the scandals they talked about surrounding her? As you know, winning a House seat in one Congressional discrict is a lot different than winning statewide. Will angry Democrats remember 2000? They sure do remember her in the Northeast, I would expect the memories in the heavily Democratic districts in Florida would be even more accute. I'd love for Harris and the Republicans to win that seat in Florida but like I said, I've listened to people like Fred Barnes and Krauthammer for a long time and they tend to be more right than people on FreeRepublic who predict all sorts of things based on emotion. Best of luck to your candidate. I'd sure like the Special Report panel to be wrong this time but I wouldn't bet my money on it.

My question was not facetious. This is the same administration that supported the liberal Arlen Specter over the conservative Pat Toomey in PA.

Yeah, I hear you. Maybe Toomey coulda shoulda won but if you are worried about maintaining control in the Senate you have to make tough decisions about who to support sometimes. Maybe they got bad advice about Toomey. Maybe they didn't. Unfortunately we'll never know.

So who controls the senate? If the Republicans tried harder maybe they could control something.
