ALBANY, May 10 There are the children he fathered with a subordinate while he was still married to someone else. Add to that some charges of nepotism. And for good measure, throw in a top aide who pleaded guilty to sodomizing a 15-year-old boy.
It is not a soap opera. It is opposition research, the dark political art known to practitioners simply as "oppo." Its subject is John Spencer, the former mayor of Yonkers, who is seeking the Republican nomination to challenge Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.
The research is being rolled out by the campaign of a fellow Republican, Kathleen Troia McFarland, as she struggles to get enough support to get a spot on the primary ballot with the state party's convention looming later this month. The McFarland campaign is circulating the research to try to convince Republicans not only that Mr. Spencer would be unelectable in November, but also that he would embarrass and hurt the party.
Ms. McFarland's top adviser, Edward J. Rollins, included the allegations about Mr. Spencer many of which are well-known, and were culled from articles in The Journal News in a detailed, six-page letter that he sent last week to Joseph Mondello, the chairman of the Nassau County Republican Party.
"I have been around American politics for 40 years, at every level," Mr. Rollins wrote in the letter, which was provided by the McFarland campaign's press office. "After all these years, it still amazes me how we repeat mistakes and select candidates without doing the due diligence that our opponents surely will do and use against us."
Mr. Mondello went on to endorse Mr. Spencer for the Senate. Tony Santino, a spokesman for Mr. Mondello, said that Mr. Mondello never received the letter and would not comment on it. An official...

I don't have access to the full article, but there is a concerted effort by the NY Dems to literally try to personally destroy every opposition candidate. The conspiracy is finally coming out in my own local paper, which surprised me as the paper slid to the left just before the last general election. I've been to Kos and Democrats.com enough to read posters who are willing to throw up lies in order to win. Sweeney is also a huge target.
Hillary is lucky he's not running as a Dem.

Huh? This is a Republican who is rolling out this dirt. And frankly, it sounds to me like Spencer is a born loser.
A Motley Crew (Senator Clinton's competition in 2006)
FReepmail me if you want on or off my New York ping list.
Go attack the conservative candidate, why don't you.
???
You're obviously confused or illiterate.
the guy is a speed bump.
Only way a clinton can win anything is to ruin the other person....they don't know what reality is....
I see that. Thanks to Howlin for sending me the full article. I guess I was pretty bleary-eyed at 4 in the morning. Now I just want to throw up.
I was told last night that there is a dem that is going to primary her..
I have contacted several of the candidates. None seems to be interested that Hillary committed the biggest campaign finance fraud ever.
Ah yes, the James Carville of Republican candidate advisors.
So we have a GOP nomination fight between a lady RINO and a candidate who's good on the issues but does not live what he professes to believe. Free Republic should offer its heartfelt condolences to Freepers living in New York.
That being said, the chances of unseating the Hildabeast were never all that good to begin with.
You win some, you lose some. That's politics.
Ah, according to the article, it isn't the NY Dems doing this, it's another Republican.
Rather than getting your panties in a wad, why not read the article?
Can you imagine the press questions to her...what do you think about the fact this fellow had relations with a subordinate???? Hmmmmm..... enquiring reporters want to know.
Or is it Bill Clinton????
