Just came in from watching Newt in person at the AEI [REPUBLICAN HEAVEN? :) ]
ENDING THE DISHONESTY at the American Enterprise Institute in WDC | 4/26/06 | Newt Gingrich

Posted on 04/26/2006 11:12:05 AM PDT by ElPatriota

Just wanted to share this experience with you Freepers. I arrived at 12:15pm, registered, promised to myself I would enjoy this moment and so I sat on the first row, about 10 feet from the podium... about 150 people, Many looked very smart. 12:25pm, I can see Newt just outside the door, greeting and having small talk with a bunch of people. He is introduced and starts taking about IMMIGRATION.

I was so excited to see this guy whom I admired so much from the days of the contract with America... Here he was, talking about something so hot... now, to try to tell you all the stuff he talked about would take me too long and you get the stuff anyway. Sufficient to say... well... that "he thinks just like me!"... :) so I guess, I am brilliant after all. Point by point resonated with me...

His point, of the many he made, is what we all know it's happening. The LACK OF HONESTY by our politicos in dealing with this issue. The fact that the U.S. is not being SERIOUS enough about fixing the problem with Immigration. He talked about how to, actually enforce the border and control it. This was VERY INTERESTING to me, because one thing is saying it, and another one, actually coming with a plan to do it. His most important point here was to read some book that details how Gulliani went about fixing the problems in New York City. By enforcing THE RULE OF LAW.

He gave several example as to "how to start" the process (akin to what Gulliani did in NYC). Start small and accomplish some small quick victories... so everyone gets your attention and get the message you mean business... (Gulliani went after the squeegee guys by getting them on "braking the law for Jay walking."

All of the sudden, Sam Wattenberg (spelling?) just sat by me... Newt just 10 feet away from me, and across the room, Bill Crystal's Dad and Mom!.... very, interesting the whole thing.

I can only tell you that just listening to Newt in person, increased something in me, not sure what :) my awareness... my I.Q?.... my intelligence?... something ... don't know exactly what, but he has impressed enough in ways I still don't understand.

No, I did not have the guts to ask a question, or shake his hand, or ask for his autograph either!... Although I wanted to do all those things.....Well maybe the next time

I saw him at a Georgia delegates meeting about 1985 when he was a young upstart...I've always liked him. He says it like it is, which admittedly has gotten him in trouble.

At least he's not afraid to talk the talk and walk the walk.

Now I don't like a few things Newt has done along the way, but I like the man. He's stand up.

Newt I like, the AEI I'm ambivalent about. AEI seems to piss me off as much as they provide me with intellectual ammunition.

A very interesting read. And makes the key points about what Washington IS NOT doing about illegal immigration, and has no intention of doing about it. A real tragedy for this country. My guess is Newt will run in 2008, and run as a serious conservative, interested in America and its future.

Many looked very smart.

Smart, as in smartly dressed?

Or smart, as in brainy looking?

Did you wave or wear a funny hat? I'll look for you on the CSPAN replay.

I like Newt, too. But he is, unfortunately, damaged goods. And most of the damage he's caused himself.

Well... yes, of course I have listened to him many many times on TV, because he is interesting, if nothing else. But seeing in PERSON :)... quite interesting.

Yes, as I was listening to him, my view - the view of many here if FR - that this "compromising" that is going on in congress right now STINKS.... that there is something that does not sit well with the American people at large. He tried to explain WHY politicians pass bad law (from doing nothing and doing something, well you better do something and ideally, the less bad of the choices, although not necessarily the SMARTEST choice :) - Something like that :)

No funny hat... although I was the ONLY "latino/hispanic" in the room. Well, at least of the ones who "look" hispanic... :) I saw a camera going in the back, but just one, and no one mentioned CSPAN at all, so I don't think they were there. Several photographers of course, but really, it felt like a small gathering..

I notice you mention "Bill Kristol's mom and dad". Keep in mind that these two people are giants in their own right and young Bill will do well to reach the high water mark of either (which, IMHO, he hasn't done yet) His dad, Irving Kristol is the last of the fifties giants left other than Buckley. His mom is Gertrude Himmelfarb and if you haven't read her books you will find the experience and refreshing as a day with Newt.

I've posted some positive stuff on Newt but many on FR won't listen to him because he has been divorced twice.

I'll check the CSPAN listings. They typically run speeches to the AEI.

Yes, I knew that much about bill's parents.. I saw something about him not long ago, in c-span, I am sure... and so they did say that about his parents (Big brains). I am not an intellectual by any means, actually very ordinary person, but I have heard enough about what you just mentioned.. and for that reason, very interesting experience :)

Actually, I don't like Newt. During the Clinton impeachment I couldn't understand why House Speaker Gingrich would not allow treason, filegate, travelgate, Juanita Broaddrick FBI interview and other evidence to be brought up in the Judiciary hearings. Conservatives certainly sent enough faxes, emails and letters requesting it.

At the same time, pornographer Larry Flynt publically said something to the effect that he knew of Representatives who were also having affairs with staffers and would reveal the names - if they didn't help Clinton as much as possible.

Newt Gingrich resigned. Later he was found to have been having an affair with a staffer.

The next House Speaker, Livingston, also refused to allow much evidence, concentrating on the Monica affair. Later he also resigned amid revelations of multiple affairs.

The next Speaker, Hastert, also refused to allow evidence but did not resign. The impeachment went forward with many charges unheard in the House and Senate.

Was Newt Gingrich under blackmail? That question has never been answered in my mind, and until it is, I ignore anything Newt says. Perhaps this has all been addressed somewhere but I have never seen it.

I actually though Newt was presidential material a while ago... so I could not understand why, someone as smart as he is... F***up the way he did... I could never understand that.

They have just come onto my radar - I'm learning about them - what pisses you off about them, if you don't mind me asking?
