Does Katie have the clout needed for CBS News?

Emperor Nero fiddled while Rome burned, according to tales of ancient history. So did Katie Couric, sort of.

She played badminton in New York while other news anchors were in Baghdad to cover the opening day of Saddam Hussein's trial.

Couric was recently plucked from NBC's Today show to read the evening news on competing CBS.

I wish her good luck; she's certainly going to need it.

Couric's new job probably saves NBC the possibility of letting her go when her contract expires next month; 15 years is a longtime for a TV personality to stay in one place.

CBS has more than earned its nickname as "the Tiffany Network" by paying her at least as much (for a half hour instead of Today's three hours).

Couric will replace disgraced anchor Dan Rather on the program.

She'll start her CBS career with several strikes against her.

If Couric doesn't handle her new negatives correctly, she'll be relegated to her familiar celebrity-interviewer role, probably only on the "60 Minutes" news feature magazine.

Couric, who has become something of a celebrity herself, will have an "old guard" of veteran CBS newscasters and reporters against her.

Will they jealously guard their turf or see through her makeup?

The so-called old guard will regard Couric as a mini-skirted, light-weight entertainer who most likely secured high-powered interviews because of her employer's reputation.

Who wants to watch a 49-year-old TV personality in a mini, anyway? Unless you get your kicks by counting spider veins?

Even Barbara Walters had more fashion sense.

Couric has never had to manage a staff of real people before, let alone a staff of competing egos.

If she wants to survive and even succeed, Couric will have to cleanse the CBS newsroom of all the old guard dinosaurs still clinging on at "60 Minutes."

Cutie Katie couldn't find her own ass with both hands, a map, compass and a GPS. She's perfect for the job.

Does Katie have the clout needed for CBS News?

She's a leftist who is peddled as "mainstream" and she brings no real intellect... she's perfect for CBS.

As if the bar is that high. The only qualifications is to be a Democratic shill who is able to articulately read the news.

Katie sucked at NBC, she will suck even worse at CBS.

If she were a car I would say CBS bought a lemon.

You mean, "Does she hate Bush enough to air something forged, just to damage him?" I think she just MIGHT have it in her.

She'll do just fine. It comes on right at dinner cooking time and we can all certainly learn how to make the best marshmallow fluff.

She hasn't the "gravitas" for being a network anchor, even if she wears her "serious glasses". The CBS viewers are older, and want a traditional anchor.

It will be a mega-flop, and I look forward to watching her crash and burn.

I thinks she has enough clout to drive the last few nails...

I'm tempted to hook up my TV again just to watch her try to out-spin Rather.

I'd like to see Andy Rooney slip some acid into her tea on opening night in order to have a nice "Muskie Moment."
