ACTING LIKE DEMOCRATS
Sierra Times ^ | 3/24/2006 | Jeff Adams

As of the writing of this article, Republicans in the U.S. Senate are working on an immigration bill to ‘match’ an immigration bill already passed by the House. It appears as if the Senate will back the bill proposed by Senators Ted Kennedy and John McCain.

To call this a loser of a bill is an understatement. For starters, anything Ted Kennedy proposes or supports cannot be good for Americans (remember Teddy was the main sponsor of an immigration reform bill back in 1965 that has helped to cause many of our immigration problems today). The fact that John McCain, a Republican that has proven he’s a straw blown in the wind, concerning his political ideology, is a co-sponsor lends no serious weight to the credibility of the bill.

How is it that the Senate, controlled by ‘conservative’ Republicans, can back a bill that clearly advocates amnesty for illegals? Senator Kennedy claims it isn’t an amnesty bill, but the bill would allow illegals to stay in the country, merely paying a fine for breaking our laws, for avoiding paying taxes, and for depressing our wages. Illegals would then get a temporary status for six years, would need to have a job, pay taxes, learn English and ‘show an understanding of U.S. government.’ These four requirements would make them better qualified to be U.S. citizens than the Senators supporting this bill.

What part of ‘illegal’ don’t Senators understand? Shouldn’t people who break our laws pay for their crimes? Using the U.S. Senate’s logic, if the police were to discover the identity of a murderer two years after the murder took place, we should then tell the murderer, “Well, you did break the law, but since that happened so long ago, just pay a fine and promise us you’ll behave from now on and you can go on your merry way.” Politicians can call their amnesty plans whatever they want to, but if illegals aren’t made to pay for their crimes via jail time, and then deported, then the government is not enforcing our laws. Anything less than punishment and deportation is a form of amnesty; period.

Simply put, Congress needs to build a long, high barrier along our land borders, and inspect every ship and container that comes into our ports. Strict enforcement of our laws should include seriously punishing employers hiring illegals and aggressively working to deport illegals. Anything less is a violation of their oaths of office and a betrayal of American citizens.

Now, I know some folks will whine about how all these illegals ‘contribute to our society.’ That simply isn’t true. According to the National Research Council, an estimated net cost for illegal immigration is between $11 billion to $22 billion a year. Much of this burden falls on local and state governments. There is an incredible burden on our medical and educational resources, which illegals participate in, but pay nothing to support.

It is estimated that 27 percent of the U.S. prison population is made up of illegals. Mind you, this isn’t illegals ‘just coming here to provide for their families,’ but illegals who’ve done something else to break the laws of our land besides just enter our country illegally (usually their crimes are of a violent nature). These criminals are often not deported, but cut loose back on our streets. This is insane, and our politicians want to reward these people for coming here, depressing our wages, financially destroying our medical and education institutions, and terrorizing our citizens. Who elected these politicians; American citizens or terrorists wanting to destabilize our country?

What’s really sad is that the overwhelming majority of citizens want the government to enforce our laws and stop rewarding people who break our laws, but the government is actually looking to encourage more of the same illegal activity. Everyone knows the Democrats will do nothing to protect the people. Unfortunately, there is a large segment of American society that mistakenly believes that the Republicans will. The Republicans have controlled Congress for a number of years now, and what do we have to show for it? Increasing debt, expanded, invasive government, and practically no enforcement of our immigration laws.

The so-called ‘conservative’ party, the Republicans, have turned into Democrats. Both major political parties are struggling to define their ‘message’ and unify their ranks for the 2006 elections. The sum total of their efforts so far is this:

Democrats: “The Republicans got us into a war we can’t win.”

Republicans: “Just think how bad things would be if the Democrats had been in charge.”

How pathetic. The Democrats haven’t changed. They are still the communist party they’ve been since George McGovern ran for president. Their goal is to destroy our constitutional republic, and in its place establish an egalitarian democracy that will put us on the same footing as the now-defunct U.S.S.R. The Republicans on the other hand are acting more and more like Democrats, rather than a principled, conservative political body.

Can the Republicans do no better than to basically advocate spending more money, blow people and things up, and let foreigners overrun our borders? Yes, I believe things would be worse under the Democrats, but there isn’t a whole lot of difference between getting stuck in the eye with a red-hot poker and a white-hot poker. It’s still going to hurt, and you’ll still be blind. If American citizens want their laws enforced, they should go looking for third party candidates who actually care about their oaths of office and putting America first. We need new blood in D.C. in the House, Senate and White House, and not just replacing old establishment insiders with new establishment insiders.

Of course as always ignore the Republican alternative being offered by Frist that puts enforcement first. The one Dopy Harry and his Democrat Senators are vowing to fillibuster. But that right, it is not about the facts, it's about the in the closet DNC mouthpieces here on Free Repubic spreading as much hate Republican propaganda as possible.

...‘show an understanding of U.S. government.’

The government makes laws that no one really has to pay attention to - eh?

If American citizens want their laws enforced, they should go looking for third party candidates . . .

The GOP smells, the rats are beyond putrid. Split our vote as the 'lil general did in 1992 and we'll have eight more years of clintonism.

The answer is to reform the GOP.

It seems the only thing that is bi-partisan in this Congress is its wish to give our country away to Hispanic illegals for the Hispanic vote.

Johnnie is a PATRIOT. You have every right to disagree with any policy or decision, but deriding a person for having strong political beliefs and promoting those beliefs is flat-out anti-American (unless we are talking about a leftist or a dim). Johnnie is neither of those.

Freepers should stop personal attacks on each other, and debate... NOT hate!

Frist's bill definitely sounds better than this one. It still doesn't address the fact that we have 11 million law breakers running around free, but it's a start.

The democrats ran on one single thing, Beat Bush. You want to run on the single stance of beating the democrats. Speaking of acting like democrats.

Sorry, I'm just not a partisan hack, I expect my politicians to do what they're elected to do.

Illegals should get amnesty for breaking immigration laws when citizens get amnesty from the IRS for breaking tax laws. Fair is fair.

No, really, there are some but they do still carry the "R" by their title. Read the Club for Growth web page, anyone that they endorse has strong libertarian leanings.
