CLEARWATER - Carlie Brucia's mother rejected drug treatment Monday and pleaded no contest to cocaine and prostitution charges.
Susan Schorpen, mother of the slain 11-year-old, has been in jail since she asked for money to perform sex acts on an undercover St. Petersburg police officer Jan. 19.
Schorpen, 36, was unable to attend a court hearing last week in Sarasota at which Joseph P. Smith was sentenced to death for abducting, raping and strangling her daughter. The abduction was caught on film by a carwash surveillance camera.
Schorpen will serve what remains of a 90-day jail sentence for possessing a glass pipe containing cocaine residue at the time of her arrest.
Circuit Judge Nancy Moate Ley also imposed a concurrent 25-day sentence on a misdemeanor charge of "precursor acts related to facilitating prostitution."
With mandated time off for good behavior, Schorpen is scheduled for release April 1, Pinellas County Jail spokesman Jim Bordner said.
Schorpen was reported missing in January by family members who said she stole cash, credit cards and jewelry.
St. Petersburg police spotted her a few days later walking along Ninth Street. She exposed herself to an undercover officer and asked him to do the same to prove he wasn't a police officer, authorities said.
Schorpen had a crack pipe in her bra with enough residue to support a felony cocaine charge, Assistant State Attorney Brian Daniels said Monday.
Prosecutors offered Schorpen a deal that would have left her with a clean record after two years of probation and a drug treatment program, Daniels said.
"She didn't want to do the treatment," he said.
The judge also imposed $640 in costs and fines and revoked Schorpen's driver's license for two years, as required by Florida drug laws.
Was this woman already like this when her daughter was killed?
Or did she take a terrible nosedive since then?
How sad.
Yup, just sad.
It is a shame.
Some of both. I just hate this for Carlie's memory. It is very sad.
From everything I've read the entire family is a mess just like her mother. Father, grandparents...everyone. The fact that this little girl was abducted at 11:00 pm on a school night should tell you everything you need to know.
The first thing I wondered was shy an 11 year old girl was walking home alone, at any time of the day. This answers the question. Mom was high on crack when she should have been taking care of her daughter. I propose, had it not been for her mom's drug problem, Carlie would still be among us.
" The fact that this little girl was abducted at 11:00 pm on a school night should tell you everything you need to know."
I didn't realize it was that late on a school night.
Do you know she was high on crack?
Or are you guessing?
This article reported the uncle was a repeat DUI'er
It wasn't.
Timeline of Carlie Brucia Abduction
"At 6:21 pm a surveillance camera captures a man taking Carli by the arm and leading her away.
At 6:30 pm her family calls local authorities to report her missing."
The $#&!!@ took her in broad open daylight.
I believe you're mistaken.
Carlie was returning from a sleepover and cut through a car wash lot.
The security camera captured the killer leading her away. The scene, as I recall, was in daylight.
No matter the time or day she was taken, one still only had to look at her home life to know it wasn't a great life. I have very little sympathy for any of the adults that were in the child's life.
Yeah, but she was actually abducted on a Sunday morning walking home from a friend's house after a sleepover
I find it more sad thatr kids aren't safe walking the street in the middle of the day!!
REALLY? That's pretty bizarre. Even if she called home just before leaving the sleepover location, to tell her parents she was on her way home, why would they call police to report her missing, when she was at most 9 minutes behind schedule? I can see an unusually strict and protective parents maybe doing that, but it sure doesn't sound like Carlie's family fits into that category.
I haven't followed any details of the case, but quite possibly she was a lot more than 9 minutes late - maybe they'd been expecting her for awhile. It would seem to be beyond the normal procedures of any parent to call the police whenever someone is 9 minutes overdue!!

It sounds like the quality of her home life had nothing to do with this abduction.
It didn't matter what kind of family she came from - this could have been anyone's kid.
Even screwed up adults can come upon hard luck - and I don't doubt that they were devestated by what happened.

Maybe they looked over the route they knew she would have taken before they called?
If you know your child is walking from point A to point B, then you know when she should arrive home.
It wouldn't have taken me long to quickly check the route for peace of mind.
If I didn't see her I would have called the police too.
