Burning Allies -- and Ourselves

DUBAI -- Officials here heard late Thursday that Karl Rove had decided to pull the plug. President Bush's political adviser was said to have conveyed to a top manager of Dubai Ports World in Washington that the White House couldn't hold out any longer against congressional pressure to kill the Arab company's plan to acquire freight terminals at six U.S. ports. The initial response of one Dubai executive was: "Who's Karl Rove?" But in the end, political leaders here recognized that it was time to fold a losing hand.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>break<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Arab radicals will be gloating, admonishing the UAE leaders, "We told you so." But officials here recognize that they're in a common fight with us against al-Qaeda. And unlike some Arab nations, the UAE really is fighting -- reforming its education system to block Islamic zealots and taking public stands with the United States despite terrorist threats. They have created one of the best intelligence services in the Arab world, and their special forces will be fighting quietly alongside the United States in Afghanistan tomorrow, and the day after.

Big time. Charles Schumer has done more to defeat American soldiers in Iraq through his demagogery over this port deal than Al Quaida could manage since 2003.

Yeah, Ive felt all along that the deal was harmless. I know that Dubai is one of the most pro american Arab countries.

It may have something to do with the fact that in Dubai, the citizens get more of a share than those in Saudi arabia, and other arab countries.

Plus its a much more cosmopolitan place than SA and the rest of the gulf.

I am curious. Were not the Washington Post one of the MOST hysteric in pushing the Port Deal lies put out by the Democrats? NOW they suddenly want to act shocked when the policies THEY pushed for are implemented?

You hear what Duncan Hunter said yesterday - that the UAE was moving nuke switches and heavy water thru their ports?

UAE: way too cozy with 'Persia', IMHO.

Many short sided people who were swept with the emotional hysteria about the Dubai Ports deal cannot understand the damage that has done and will do to our efforts to make allies in the Arabs world. I think those people do not think that we need to make allies in the Arab world, and that is even further indication of horrible ignorance. If we want to make a typical ally in the Arab world it would have been something like we have in the UAE, I greatly hope they remain our allies and do not retaliate by asking our military to leave their bases there and ask our CIA and FBI to leave their country, it will be a great loss of strategic bases and even worst of a very important ally.

The UAE is all business, IMO. The sheikhs, and the people arent interested in anything but better money making opportunities. So I doubt that theyre much of a threat.

Umm....now this is probably a bit radical...but would it really be so bad to have an American company operating American ports?

Have you ever watched any news coming out of UAE? They despise anyone who supports Israel in anyway, us included. So unless we are willing to see Israel blown off the map, the UAE will only be fair-weathered friends at best.

Don't worry about them asking us to leave, their dictatorship would crumble quickly without us there.

Remember the reaction on the Arab street when the airplanes struck the towers in New York ? Are these the "alies in the Arab word" you were talking about ?

The media won! The no spine Republicans in the House and Senate caved to the New York Times and the Washington Post and other left-wing anti-American fascist idiots. If this port BUSINESS deal was so bad why do we allow China to run several ports on the West Coast? A Chinese company that is controlled by the military and Communist dictators that are proven enemies of the United States.

Again the spineless idiots that call themselves Republicans have caved to left-wing pro terrorist anti-American scum in the media and to so-called Conservatives who have proven once again that they are really covert idiot left-wingers. (I can see them now kneeling in front with their knee pads ready to give #### to their democrat masters) These idiot cowards have made sure that our real enemies have access to our nation and are trying to smack our friends. Scum, Scum, Scum no more money for the House or Senate and I may even vote for a left-wing Nazi democrat. First time in my life!!!!!

NO to our friends the UAE and yes to our enemies the Chinese, these are total idiots.

Hahaha. Oh wait, you're serious, let me laugh harder. Bwahahahaha!

Not giving Arabs control of our ports is going to hurt American troops...that's pretty funny.

You hear what Duncan Hunter said yesterday - that the UAE was moving nuke switches and heavy water thru their ports

And the proof of this accusation is WHERE? Hunter is Armed Services. He has NO "inside information". Just like the ""Arabs are taking over our ports" line. Just another spin lie to get all the good little Chicken Littles to go into mental meltdown mode.

Now that more people are beginning to realize who controls some of our ports, I have a feeling the ownerships may change. This has brought that to light. People are no more happy that China is controlling our ports than an Arab country. Hopefully, our Congresspeople will be looking into this, which I think they already are, and it will be dealt with. One thing at a time.

Because in the end, our ports should be controlled by American companies, all of them.

Please don't loose any sleep over the UAE being mad at us.

No matter which side of this issue one comes down on. In the end, American companies should be operating, controlling, managing, etc...American ports. It is just the times we are living in.
