Just hours after the Associated Press (AP) ‘shocked‘ New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin yesterday by showing him video of a FEMA briefing during Hurricane Katrina in which government officials speculate about the impact of the expected Category 5 storm, the AP has shown the mayor a second “alarming and disgusting” video.
The first video shows President George Bush, Homeland Security Director Michael Chertoff and then-FEMA Director Michael Brown, among others, dealing with how to respond to the developing disaster, and what to make of inconsistent reports from New Orleans about the condition of the Lake Pontchatrain levees.
The second video, shot by a parking lot security camera several days earlier, shows row upon row of yellow school buses, sitting idle on a day when thousands of local residents remained in the path of the storm.
“Someone at the White House should have given the order to use those school buses to evacuate the city before Katrina hit,” said the Mayor, who is the top local government official in New Orleans. “It makes me ill to think that the federal government failed to intervene to save these people. George Bush had plenty of time, and he did nothing.”
Mr. Nagin, who is the Mayor of New Orleans, noted that local residents “did just what we have trained them to do in a disaster. They watched the hurricane coverage on CNN and waited for a federal official to knock on the door and rescue them.”
“They followed their training,” said Mr. Nagin, the Mayor of New Orleans, “but the knock never came. They were helpless, utterly helpless.”
In May 2002, Ray Nagin was elected Mayor of New Orleans, a city which sits below sea level, between the Gulf of Mexico and a large lake.
White House spokesman Scott McClellan today said, “One can always argue after the fact about whether President Bush should have intervened more forcefully to protect New Orleans from this grave threat, but Ray Nagin is the lawfully elected mayor, and whether he remains in office is up to the people of New Orleans, not to the president.”

Scrappleface is good. About half the time I read one of their articles I start to get pissed then realize I've been had yet once again!
I thought Nagin had attained the pinnacle of nitwithood with his previous statements, but I see I was mistaken. Even assuming Bush knew about the buses, wouldn't he be right to assume that YOU, Ray Nagin, as the highest ranking official of the City of New Orleans would have already acted to mobilize them? I certainly would have operated on that basis.
Anyone voting to reelect this imbecile is participating in a suicide pact.
BTW, what ever happened to the reports about cops getting relief in Vegas because they were exhausted?
Did they teach Civics when that nutcase went to school? The mayor of the city, a county commissionor, or even the governor of the state had all the required authority to do this. The President really didn't at the time. The Federal government does not control city, county, or state assets.

This pic was taken much later than the original that showed about 6" of water and intentionally created the impression that nothing could be done about these flooded vehicles...CNN if I recall correctly. The first pic was on Tuesday PM and any county employee that could drive a stick could have driven to the dome to ferry people out. In fact, some people commandeered a bus and drove themselves to Houston, chipping in for fuel along the way. This whole mess was the result of liberal Democratic policies of the last 60 years in LA to the point that people couldn't even help themselves, choosing to wait to be rescued. Classic.

LOL. It's gotten to the point where the satirical lines are so blurred that you never know.
It sure does. His actual reactions to the video haven't been any saner than this. He's pissed that the Bush administration KNEW that those levees could fail, and didn't declare some sort of national emergency in advance (which would have involved what? pushing the city and state officials aside so FEMA workers could commandeer the school buses and drive people out of there before the storm hit?). Nagin's actual words after he saw the video were: "It seems they were aware of everything ... that we would need lots of help. Why was the response so slow?" This is the same Mayor Nagin who was spouting away on national TV a couple of hours AFTER the hurricane had passed, that the city had "gotten lucky" and just had some clean-up to do. If the Bush administration made one big mistake, it was assuming that Mayor Nagin and Governor Blanco had a combined IQ above room temperature, and that their first-hand accounts of the just-post-hurricane situation must have had some basis in fact.
One thing about Nagin - he KNOWS disgusting when he sees it. And he sees it everyday in his mirror!
Did you hear that Mayor Nagin was recently asked about his opinion of Roe vs. Wade and his answer was that he didn't care how his people got back to New Orleans, he just wanted them home.
Hard to tell farce from fiction when it comes to Nagin.
The President has ZERO need to worry about using school buses to evacuate locals.
