Greenpeace takes protest to Kimberly-Clark

Some 60 Greenpeace student activists protested at the Knoxville offices of paper products manufacturer Kimberly-Clark, calling on the company to use recyclable fibers rather than wood from virgin forests.

"We’re here today to send a message to Kimberly-Clark, the largest maker of tissue paper in the world, that we want them to stop wiping out ancient forests to make disposable products like Kleenex," said Ginger Cassady, Greenpeace forests campaigner from San Francisco.

A statement released by Kimberly-Clark, which has administrative and accounting operations in Knoxville, said the company maintains "strict corporate policies that emphasize sustainability and sound environmental practices as cornerstones of doing business."

The statement continued that with the spin-off of Neenah Paper Inc. in 2004, Kimberly-Clark adheres to a corporate policy that "prohibits the use of fiber from virgin rainforests or ecologically significant old growth areas, including designated areas in Canada’s Boreal Forest."

Protesters presented an oversized gold-colored medallion, simulating an Olymbic gold medal, to Kimberly-Clark’s Knoxville office on Summit Hill Drive to signify the company’s status as the "world’s No. 1 forest destroyer."

Among the protesters were student activists from about 30 states, with some giving testimonials about when they first realized Kimberly-Clark was destroying the environment.

"I was distressed to learn that only 20 percent of our forests are left and that Kimberly-Clark is using the forests to make toilet paper, a disposable product," said Sarah Priddy, a University of Tennessee freshman majoring in global studies and French who was demonstrating. "We want them to use more recycled fiber."

Only 20% of the protesters have enough intelligence to tie their own shoes. See, making up statistics can be fun, and anyone can do it.

Global Studies and French. Figures. I wonder if she feels like a hypocrite every time she wipes her butt.

"that we want them to stop wiping out ancient forests"

They've been whining about 'ancient forests' for so long I can only assume there's an endless supply.

Greenpeace activists bathe an average of 2.3 times a year. It's a fact. I made it up.

So, ummm, hate to be all literal and all, but does Kimberly-Clark actually cut down trees in primal forests in order to make anything? Do they even buy wood pulp as a secondary product from lumber manufacturers who cut in primal forests?

I thought planted forests were a far more efficient source of wood pulp.

Old trees die like old people. Big old trees prevent new growth until they are dead and rotten. A managed forest provides continual grothe ranging from seedlings to mature marketable trees. The witless freshman who thinks only 20% of our forest are left needs to learn the meaning of renewable resources.

I guess these idiots don't know(actually they do but they lie a lot)that most paper mills use wood grown on tree farms that use fast growing trees that are only suitable for paper making. I don't know of any company that is allowed to log so-called "old growth forests" anymore.

These people simply want to destroy our economy and the bad thing about it is that for many years a majority of Americans believed their BS. I hope we are finally realizing that most of the Greenies lie and make up statistics to prove a point!
