Moving toward a deal that could allow President Bush and congressional GOP leaders to save face and avert a prolonged confrontation, GOP officials said today that they were discussing the idea of having Dubai Ports World seek a new review of its acquisition of a British company's operation that runs several key U.S. ports.

Reading the last paragraphs of the article, it is clear that this was leaked by Frist's office to make him look good on foreign policy and national security, areas in which he has absolutely no experience.
The Frist-Saves-The-Day spin is why I included the Frist Barf Alert. It is a very lame attempt to show that he is more adept at the War on Terror than the sitting president.
NO yesterday. NO today. NO tomorrow. What part don't they understand?
There's an article at The New Republic (linked at RealClear Politics) by John Judis that makes the case that the port deal has Bush support because Dubai pulled Boeing's @ss out of the fire with a very large order for planes last year.
I've linked to it above...but for some reason the link is not working right now.

Thanks for the link. If the Dubai deal gets killed, we should insist that the Chicoms lose their ports sold to them for Clinton campaign contributions.
It has Democrat spelled all over front of it.Why does it say save face for the GOP. The Democrats started the ranting and raving and of course the Republicans jumped in. It seems to me neither side of the isle does their job beforehand and they all are just politicking. I still dont like the deal but lets not forget back in 1999 a lot of these Senators stood by when Clinton turned the Panama Canal over to the Chinese. They stood by as Clinton gave the Chinese all the computer technology and encryption they need to pit America in their cross hairs. We in America do not have leaders,we have kings, queens and stars. None of them spend a huge amount of time doing their homework nor do their Billion dollar staffs. They are like the Hollywood crowd seeking the cameras.Like Alan Simpson said,"confusion, crap and controversy" and all the while it is their own selfish ass they are looking out for while America burns. With this kind of leadership America is doomed.
"Frist for President" -- the younger generation should pay attention: Bill Frist is a walking, talking example of what NOT TO DO if you have aspirations of running for president.
This "deal" was out in the open and above board.
"The announcement of DP World's bid for P&O was made in November 2005, and the news was widely reported in the press and international financial trade publications. "
Schumer's political posturing, along with the weak-in-the-knees (head?) Rino's, though expected, is pathetic.
Even more pathetic is the thinking [?] of the American public, that we are now a democracy, and no longer a representative republic.
People that haven't a clue (I am addmittedly one) about ports, how they are operated and by whom, have become stampeeded into believing we are being sold down the proverbial river by President Bush.
While I understand he (GWB) is a "lame duck", that there are those (like Frist) that wish to upstage him for political profit, and the enemy Democrat Party will do anything to bring him and the country down, this has become insane.
To watch the usual suspects, here on Free Republic, wail and castigate, while expected, has become obscene.
These same detractors would undoubtably pee their pants should they even get in close proximity to a longshoreman, never mind having an ability to understand the workings of CFIUS.
We don't have to act desperate about this port deal. Too many here are jumping fearing we won't be liked. There's much about the UAE that's not understood. As to who needs who the most?
The UAE isn't a charitable organization that's giving us the right to dock there for free. We pay them. But that's not why were important to them. We're important because if we weren't there the Iranians would swoop over and take their oil fields. And if we said "dock our ships for free or we're pulling out, they would dock our ships for free. Now, the relationship is equal. When the war is over, it will be unequal in our favor.
My suggestion to the scardy cats who are afraid the UAE won't like them? They should stop acting so desperate. It's not attractive.
It's a shame that we come to the realization... we've totally sold our country out. All the work of the past shipping magnates is decades gone... and we can't do it ourselves.
I have a question or two.
What would happen (or what other staging areas do we have for the WOT), if because of the uproar Dubai wouldn't stage our fighter planes and military equipment anymore?
Whether this deal is blackmail, tit-fo-tat or whatever, where would that put the WOT? I know they are protected by us being there but have too much access to our military equipment. Why didn't anyone scream about that these past years?
Also, would P&O (if the buyout of terminals deal didn't work), be obligated to finish their contract?
Who else on the list of bidders can do it?
I know China wouldn't touch it and I don't know about Singapore.
re: Chicoms
Exactly
Well said!!
If the deal was good enough for clintoon and china, what has changed?
Exactly! A British company is acquired by a UAE company and all hell breaks loose. Stop the Arabs, visions of mosques at our our ports, secret deals, etc...
The paranoia is just unbelievable.
I don't like being blackmailed.
FYI, Andrew Wilkow's on at 10 on WABC radio, thought you might be interested to hear his take on the ports... people waited all week to hear it.
