20 new-born babies dumped in Harare's sewer system weekly

AT LEAST 20 new-born babies and foetuses are dumped in Harare’s sewer system every week, reports said Friday.

The Harare City Council said the baby dumping frequently led to the clogging of the sewerage network in and around the city.

“The situation is very serious and I think there is need for a cultural shift because some of the things that are happening now are shocking,” town clerk Nomutsa Chideya told the Herald.

“Apart from upsetting the normal flow of waste to our works, it is not right from a moral standpoint.”

Sand and an assortment of discarded bits and pieces, such as cooking pots and spoons, were also found among objects that frequently block the system.

Presenting a turnaround plan for the city on Wednesday, Chideya said officials were retrieving at least 20 bodies and foetuses weekly from both the sewerage network and treatment plants.

Some of the babies would have been flushed down toilets, and others thrown into sewer main holes.

Chideya said this came to light when council employees attend to sewer blockages or when the bodies surface at the city’s sewerage and water treatment plants.

The Herald said cases of abortion and baby dumping have been on the increase in Harare.

Zimbabweans are grappling with the worst economic crisis in history and most families are survivign on reduced food rations – Sapa.

Everytime Nigeria, North Korea or Sudan start to gain some ground in the “absolute worst place on the face of the earth” contest, Zimbabwe ups the stakes again.

Zimbabwe sounds like a candidate for head of the U.N. Human Rights Commission.

Yes they have. If they could have aborted those babies before they were born this tragedy never would have happened.

British-style understatement.

Of course, if it didn't upset the flow of waste, some court in the US would probably decide the practice was a logical extension of the 'constitutional right' (cough! cough! wheeze!) to late-term abortions (which it is--thus providing a reductio ad absurdum of 'pro-choice' 'jurisprudence'.)

If a white man suggested this was a proper thing to do with black babies, he would be considered a racist monster. (Of course, he would also be if he critisized it.)

They are no doubt preparing victory celebrations. Peter Singer is expected to be the featured speaker.

Satan is pleased. This dehumanization is not an accidental consequence of Mugabe's actions, but a foreseeable one. Soul rot and pandaemonium and hopelessness.

Anyplace the British went, they left behind the seeds of civilization, including sewers.

But of course, this has NOTHING to do with Zimbabwe's dysfunctional...ahem...government and everything to do with "the sad legacy of Colonialism", don't you know.

You know, the more I sit here and try to be an understanding human being, the more I find out about Africa and the Middle East and realize that the anthropologists are wrong; there is no way that modern man originated in these places, or that this is the cradle of civilization.

There is no hint of humanity, and there is no sign of civilization. When westerners came into contact with these people, sure, there was exploitantion. But they left behind schools, roads, hospitals, universities, infrastructure, democracy, soccer, and a whole lot more, and yes, even sewers.

These are not human beings. They are animals. Actually, animals are smarter. They move when there's no water nearby and they don't engage in clitorectomy.

Perhaps it's time to re-colonize the planet and save it from itself.

Is it possible to re-colonize, but with a bit more humanity? (i.e. Build an economy, provide rule-of-law, and jobs, make it pay for itself, but keep the profits in the country.)

Certainly it is. The question then becomes "Who the hell wants to re-colonize a continent whose rate of AIDS infection is higher than most democrats IQ's, where the local tribal, ethnic and religious differences cause people to simply slaughter each other, and where, for the most part, most regions can only sustain an economy (if ever!)based upon a single commodity?

Because that's a major issue. When your economy is based on coffee, diamonds or oil, that's one thing. When it's dependant on copra, elephant footpads and monkey droppings, it's another.

Here's an interesting idea. Here int he US we're debating the merits oif ethanol. Now on another thread here, someone said that the number of acres required to produce one gallon of ethanol is rather large. So, why don't we recolonize africa, restore the rainforest and use it to fill our gas tanks. After everyone dies of AIDS, Ebola, starvation, dysentery, cholera, beri-beri, leprosy and the heartbreak of psoriasis, there will be nobody to fuss over it.

In fact, that's probably a step towards the solution right there: Africa as bio-diesel supplier top the world...hmmmm...
