JERUSALEM & D.C. WERE BLIND TO THIS 'BLACK DAY'

By URI DAN

JERUSALEM — The reaction here is: Shock and "Oy!"

Like the shock-and-awe military tactics that transformed the Mideast in the Iraq war, Hamas' stunning election victory has instantly redrawn the balance of power in the region.

This time, the Israeli political, intelligence and defense establishment was caught off guard. There were no intelligence estimates or evaluation that forecast a Hamas victory, let alone the landslide that the world woke up to yesterday.

That means the Sharon-less Israeli government is working overtime to contain their shock — and the situation — under the pressures of Israel's own upcoming election.

"This is one of the blackest days in the history of the state of Israel," said Silvan Shalom, who up until two weeks ago was foreign minister.

The Hamas victory sends an ominous message throughout the Mideast. No one knows what the possible Hamas influence or even control of the Palestinian security forces in the West Bank will mean to the east Bank — that is, Jordan.

Until now, Jordan has been a stable kingdom that has managed to deal with its al Qaeda cells, like the ones that blew up hotels in Amman recently, and the militants among the 70 percent of its population that is Palestinian.

How did we come to this?

"Hitler was also elected democratically," Shalom explained.

But it didn't have to happen.

the Israeli political, intelligence and defense establishment was caught off guard.

If this blindness continues, Israel is doomed.

I could see it. I predicted it. I told people when the initial vote was a Fatah win that the election must have been rigged because Hamas won big.

Any idiot could see it coming. Except obviously not the idiots in Jerusalem and Washington.

Israel ran from Hamas in Gaza, how could the "Palestinians" not reward Hamas.

Hamas is honest, in their aims. How could the "Palestinians" not be drawn to that purity.

If Jerusalem and Washington couldn't anticipate this result what else do they get wrong?

I have to be careful what I write on here, but I fear it would take a coup in Israel to set things right.

How do we know Bibi learned from his mistakes the last time he governed. He's a very slippery politician.

Yeah, you were doing so well holding the terrorists in check that that dogma should of gone on forever. Hamas has gotten way for decades blaming EVERYThing ON the Jews and Fatah. NOW they have no one to blame when THEY fail. Doing NOTHING will only work until the Terrorists get a nuke or figure away to pull a massive 9-11. It is time for cournage to try a different way rather then do NOTHING until the tide sweeps all away.

Needs to be a whole lot of Muslims dieing, the more the better and the sooner the better. Let's get it over with, because it is going to happen anyway and the longer we wait, the bloodier it is going to be.

This election obviously showed that polls there are not to be trusted.

But pretending that the current polls are valid, a vast number of the Israeli population are today as nuts as their leaders and those polls say Bibi has no chance of being elected.

Even if elected- which I fervently hope- he is only the best of a terrible lot.

Even Hamas was surprised by the win.

Forgive me for repeating myself but I hope Bibi has learned from his mistakes. Newt Gingrich told him not to go to Wye River and Newt turned out to be correct, too.

To quote a famous former US President, "Bombing starts in 5 minutes".

We can only hope.

I was also surprised.

I knew Hamas would win big.

But I was surprised that Fatah, Israel and the US didn't rig the election.

Which makes it all so much more scary.

That the three didn't rig the election proves that they really didn't anticipate the obvious result.

The U.S. and Israel knew Hamas would win. It's going to be fun to watch what happens when the PA's funding runs out next week. One word: Stratergy.

ISLAM is a terrorist organization. Fatah, Hamas, the PLO, and etc. are just the local chapters.

"This is one of the blackest days in the history of the state of Israel," said Silvan Shalom, who up until two weeks ago was foreign minister.

The blackness of the day appears to have resulted from the Israeli and U. S. appeasers finally being presented with the stark, inescapable reality of who and what the Palestinian people are--absolutely determined, irreconcilable, ruthless mass murdering anti-semites. Th's is good because most people can only deal with reality once they recognize it.

If Jerusalem and Washington couldn't anticipate this result what else do they get wrong?

They still think a peace is possible while the State of Israel survives and with the Arabs undefeated.

That's the big delusion from which all else flows.

The Israelis have several sub-delusions, mainly that there is such a thing as an "international community" which issues enforceable laws that can give to Israel a "right to exist".

The U.S.

You must be in the Bush/Rice see all, know all, anticipate all, and have the solution, club.

I've been forced by reality into the other club.
