A U.S. soldier court-martialed for refusing to wear the insignia and blue beret of the United Nations and serve under the world body's command is now appealing his case to a federal appeals court.
Michael New was among several hundred troops sent to Macedonia by President Clinton in 1995 on a U.N. peacekeeping mission. But New refused to obey the order, calling it illegal for him to serve under a foreign power.

He will probably have to appeal all the way up to the UN. /sarc
whos paying for his bills
Let me preface this by saying that I'd rather be stood against a wall and shot than wear a UN beret. But, I don't think he'll win. There's ample precedence for US troops serving under foreign commanders. I don't know about the wearing of the uniform. He may have a case there.
If it were me I would have shot my UN commander THEN quit. :-)
This is a first from everything I have searched. At no time, in the history of our military, has our soldiers been ordered to wear the uniform of any other nation or nations.
This was Slick Willy and his Euro wanna be approach to scoiety in these United States.
Why has this gone on for so long? I'm not understanding this whole story. Why doesn't the DOD make it go away?
the blue helmet(or beret)is part of the uniform ........sounds like he has a case to me
good question

US soldiers on MFO duty in the Sinai have worn the MFO uniform long before Michael New's UNPROFOR deployment.
The Bush/Clinton/Bush/Clinton administration isn't going to back down.
Michael New BUMP.

The SCOTUS/Church thread?
I'd laugh if it wasn't so damned close to the truth.
This helmet? I would not want to wear it either.
UNPROFOR was a joint mission under a UN mandate.
There were no UN commanders at Camp Able Sentry nor was the UN designated commander of Troops in Macedonia a UN soldier, he was Swedish IIRC.
The point remains New made a big deal out of a blue hat and a patch, that was really no different from the MFO orange hat and patch.
What I'd really like to know was who started the gripe, I have serious doubts that New did himself.
If you read my post that's what I said. He may have a case with the wearing of the uniform. Serving under foreign command is nothing new however.
