Santorum Wants Non-Partisan Panel To Evaluate Iraq War

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Rick Santorum yesterday wrote a letter to President Bush asking him to create an independent, non-partisan commission to objectively evaluate progress in Iraq.

The letter is a significant shift by the Pennsylvania Republican, whose stalwart support for nearly all aspects of the Bush administration's policies in Iraq could be a significant handicap in his race against state Treasurer Robert P. Casey this year if Pennsylvanians' support for the war continues to decline.

Mr. Santorum told the president that he was joining other members of Congress in their call for a panel that could "objectively and critically report" progress in Iraq to build Americans' confidence and trust in the mission.

Dear NRSC:

I am amazed that you would continue to ask for money by saying that you and your bunch of traitors support MY President when the bunch of yellow backs in the US Senate, whom we elected with out money and hard work, try every day to undermine the war on terror and our President, by not fighting the democrats and groveling at every opportunity.

Now I see that Rick Santorum has shown his true colors and wants a Non-Partisan committee to study the Iraq war. Is it going to be like the 9/11 Commission where the democrats loaded the members with those that were there solely to protect Clinton and the enemies of the American People? This is about the dumbest thing that I have heard lately. There are NO non-Partisan Committees in Washington. Why did we not have a non-Partisan commission investigate WW II because many of the American people (on the left who supported Hitler until he attacked Stalin) did not want to go to war and likewise the Civil War where the left wanted to declare victory and give the south to the south.

Why are the people who are committing TREASON still in the US Senate? Why are those democrats who are leaking TOP Secret intelligence information not in jail awaiting their execution? WHY DO THOSE WE ELECTED NOT SUPPORT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE AND INSTEAD SUPPORT THE TERRORIST TRAITORS AT THE NEW YORK TIMES?

We elected you to fight for our principles not put on kneepads and kneel in front of your democrat masters. Since you would rather have your name in the New York Times or Washington Post and be invited to the next democrat orgy, than support the American people I have stopped supporting you and your election efforts.

Give it to the democrats, at least we know that they will give the country to the terrorist and establish a left wing dictatorship. Then you can be happy that you are mentioned in the New York Times as a moderate idiot.

RESIGN: Go home and grovel in front of your democrat masters.

There is already plenty of facts and figures on the war and the situation in Iraq that are publicly available.

That's right. We won, and the mop-up phase is moving along on schedule. Two or three years from now Iraq will have better border security than we do, most of our troops will have moved on to the next task and the fact of Iraqi self-government will be opening the eyes of other Arab populations.

Huh? Whaa? We had a panel of about 100,000,000 people make a judgement on the War on Terror in November of 2004.

A desperate move. He will not gain ANY Dem/lib support, and only lose support from his side. And EVERYONE sees he's willing to sell out his principles.

Reminds me of when Mario Cuomo was trying to get a fourth term as NY governor. He had always been against the death penalty, and at least had a kind of grudging respect from his opponents for taking a principled and unpopular stance, even though it was wrong. Then he flip-flopped to a degree on it. Do you think this helped him with ANYONE? Of course not.

And of course there's the matter of cutting our troops, and our President, off at the knees.

Buh-bye Rick.

That's the curse conservatives like us bear - we have principles.

The Dems seem to stick together no matter what.

They must be more accustomed to the stench . . .

Santorum is a Lindsay Graham wannabe. He is desperate and despite his backing and filling will likely be defeated in the next election.

"And to think PA coulda had Toomey."

Coulda...

...If only Santorum and Dubya didn't campaign for Specter who beat Toomey by a 1.5% margin in what was a neck-and-neck race.

Who knew Santorum was such a coward??

IOW, he's jumping ship with the Dems and McCain for political cover.

Someone tell him to put the shovel down. His political grave is deep enough. Buh bye.

Or else he's paving the way for his next career--GOP-bashing ex GOPer. Look at Pat Buchanan. He's the model. You can get plenty of tv gigs and you get to be on Imus in the morning, as long as you bash your own party. I expect that's where this is headed for Santorum.

Another Joe Scarborough.

This is obviously a desperation move, just as his flip-flop on ID was.

Bush needs his support, not another "nonpartisan panel."

This is extremely disappointing, coming from a Senate leader. He won't pick up a single Democrat vote, but will likely lose some GOP support.

Nah, Santorum doesn't want to emulate Lindsey.

He probably would be more than happy to go back to being a loyal Republican that votes more or less for the causes we want if re-elected.

Lindsey is riding Mccain's butt in their fantasy of controlling the world on a Third Way rail where they can ditch Democrats-Republicans-Liberals-Conservatives and only have to keep the MSM happy.

Complete difference.

However, Santorum has demonstrated strong whiffs of desperation. Instead of standing on bedrock conservative principles and telling his citizens Look- You may not always agree with me but you know where I stand. You knew where I stood when you elected me. Basically showing pride for his accomplishments and try to appeal to the fairness of the electorate to reward him for acting as their Senator in good faith for years, Santorum tries to triangulate. Triangulation died with the Clinton's. More People want folks now that are honest and stand by convictions now.

Granted he's in a more Liberal state, but that's further reason he should remain solid. The one recommendation he had to offer Democrats was that he was an honest man without pretense that responded to his constituents and worked hard. he's blowing that and crafting an image of someone so desperate to hang onto his job he'll say almost anything, unreliable. And in so doing he's alientating conservatives as well. It is a DUMB strategy and his advisors should be fired.

And I'd give advice to Rick. No job is worth compromising principles. If you do go out, you should go out with honor. Uncompromising in who you are, not flitting in the wind. Right now that very behavior of wilting under pressure is making your chances for re-election worse anyway.

Sure seems to be putting his personal interests ahead of anything else. What a shocker. I find that usually when I am disappointed, it just means my expectations were too high.

Certainly no one can accuse me of being a Santorum-basher--but this is just a dumb move on his part. Does he really think he's going to get ANY of the moonbat vote?

And that is what sealed santorums defeat in this election. He sold us out. and conservatives don't forget.

What I want to know is when are some of these politicians going to get smart and realize that when they run (and vote) as conservatives, they win?
