Well geeze...now I feel bad...
all this time I thought that California wasn't doing a good job in the corrections department.
I stand corrected.

Senate Majority Leader Gloria Romero, who chairs two corrections oversight committees, criticized prison officials for failing to adopt what she called "no brainer" precautions. The Democrat from Los Angeles plans hearings this month. wonder when she'll have hearings on why CA taxpayers aren't paying for meds and shrinks ,too. Demonrat and "no-brainer" go together like inmate and rope.

Good - maybe this will offset some of the taxpayer rip-off costs that keep our convicted DEATH ROW inmates in the hotel for 15 years...

Hasn't everyone seen that pic of Tookie ... Holy Cow, No wonder there are so many suicides in CA prisons. How many were actually influenced by men such as him?

You just can't please some people. Inmates have TV, radio, magazines, weight rooms, baseball fields, basketball courts, 3 hot meals a day, someone to do their laundry. The list is endless.
I wonder what the non-inmate suicide ratio is in Californy.

EXACTLY!
Not to mention- then we don't have to worry about being like GERMANY and allowing said prisoners become bartering tools for hostage takers....
"You want us to release who?......Let me check that name in our system.......oooops! Sorry- he just stabbed hisself 36 times about 10 minutes ago...."

Doesn't seem high enough to me. The enviro in AZ that committed sideways did it by smothering himself with a plastic bag. CA should give every inmate on the inside for a violent crime one of those bags.

Despite the direction that this story tries to take, THIS is what leaped out at me:
"...the nationwide prison suicide rate at about 13 deaths per 100,000, compared to 11 deaths per 100,000 in the general community."
Nationwide, incidence of suicide among inmates is just 2/100,000 more than incidence of suicide among the general population.
THAT says something VERY DISTURBING about the general mental state of our whole country. Are we really that nationally depressed; to the point that it's only 2/100000 more depressing IN prison than OUT of prison??
[shaking head in disbelief]
But, then, ...
<SARCASM>
...it's probably all Bush's fault.

Actually, this kind of makes sense. When you consider how liberal CA is and the number of CA judges who are more concerned with a felon's 'feelings' and 'self-esteem', the fact that they STILL ended up in prison makes them the losers of all losers.
I'd probably kill myself, too.
