Possibly 12 times more Americans are criminally inclined than Europeans but take into account the police no-go areas in so many European cities. Criminals in those areas never get prosecuted and imprisoned because they are allowed the freedom to do their worst in those areas.

This hyperbole makes me question his credibility.

There is another option, beside believing what you read so long as it pleases your political preferences or rejecting if it does not.

I note that Mr. Roberts doesn't question the convictions handed down by the Abu Ghraib courts-martial.

Would you recommend Abu Ghraib treatment to the arrested American suspects?

I do not find wearing stripes with plaid to be horrific torture and abuse, but I still would not want it to be imposed on all prisoners....

No. The breakdown in military discipline was deplorable.

That said, our people were guilty of humiliating prisoners, not mass murder. Anyone who cannot tell the difference is delusional.

The Last Waltz?
The Coming End of the American Superpower

By PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS

The US economy is headed toward crisis, and the political leadership of the country--if it can be called leadership--is preoccupied with nonexistent weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East.

The US economy is failing. The afflictions are serious. They could be fatal even if diagnosed and treated. America is losing the purchasing power of its currency and its ability to create middle class jobs.

A Reputation in Tatters

George W. Bush and his gang of neocon warmongers have destroyed America’s reputation. It is likely to stay destroyed, because at this point the only way to restore America’s reputation would be to impeach and convict President Bush for intentionally deceiving Congress and the American people in order to start a war of aggression against a country that posed no threat to the United States.

America can redeem itself only by holding Bush accountable.

How New Orleans Was Lost
by Paul Craig Roberts

Chalk up the city of New Orleans as a cost of Bush's Iraq war.

There were not enough helicopters to repair the breached levees and rescue people trapped by rising water. Nor are there enough Louisiana National Guardsmen available to help with rescue efforts and to patrol against looting.

The situation is the same in Mississippi.

The National Guard and helicopters are off on a fool's mission in Iraq.

The National Guard is in Iraq because fanatical neoconservatives in the Bush administration were determined to invade the Middle East and because incompetent Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld refused to listen to the generals, who told him there were not enough regular troops available to do the job.

One thing that bugs me about the current criminal-justice system is the way the deck is stacked against the defense just in terms of resources. The prosecution has all the resources it needs to make its case, while the court-appointed defense only gets a pittance. If there's supposed to be a presumption of innocence, why does the state spend far more money on the proposition that you're guilty than on the proposition that you're not guilty?

thats why I plead tp something I didn't do. The sheriff said that he was going to testify that I had confessed. I hadn't and approached him about it. I said that it wasn't true, that it was a lie. He hooked his thumb in his belt, puffed out his chest and IN THE COURTROOM, in front of the prosecuting att and defending att said, " I don't care". They all looked at me and sain take the plea or you'll go to jail. I swear to God that this is true.

I agree. The article sounded 51% reasonable until...

The U.S. invasion of Iraq has brought the breakdown in American moral fiber to the fore. The horrific tortures and abuses at Abu Ghraib prison...

We need another source to discuss the strength and weaknesses of the American legal system. I personally try to stay out of trouble and out of court.

Just as the person on the rack admitted to guilt in order to stop the pain, the present day defendant succumbs to psychological torture and cops a plea, whether he is innocent or guilty, in order to avoid ever more charges.

Sure. Happens all the time. Perfectly innocent people "cop a plea". Yep.

The title is true to form. Just ask Tom DeLay or President Bush about how they are convicted already because someone, usually the media or the Dirty Dozen Democrats in concert, have made accusations.
