Just as the person on the rack admitted to guilt in order to stop the pain, the present day defendant succumbs to psychological torture and cops a plea, whether he is innocent or guilty, in order to avoid ever more charges.

Sure. Happens all the time. Perfectly innocent people "cop a plea". Yep.

Some do. That is why, if I were ever accused of a crime and it looked like I didn’t have a chance of justice I would have to take a plea – but it would be an Alfred Plea.

Well yes it does.

If your facing time, large legal bills, etc.

Then a guilty plea in exchange for probation is the cheapest route.

This happens all the time.

I realize this article refers to actually serving time but legal bills and multiple years to serve would plausibly have the same effect on people.
