After Four Decades as a Columnist, It's Time for Baby Steps
So, what's next?
I've been wrestling with the question, in one form or another, ever since I decided that the end of this year would be the end of my 39 years as a newspaper columnist.
For years I've had two nightmare scenarios. In the first, I'm sitting in a wheelchair on the deck of a luxury cruise ship, wearing a lap robe against the chill -- and wondering where the devil I am. That is to say, I've feared that after reaching the point where I have the financial means to enjoy myself, with no further need to scrimp and save, I will discover that it's really too late for enjoyment. The second nightmare has me leaving my office horizontally, either dead or debilitated, without having had a real chance to discover who else I am, or what I might have done next.
The precondition for even considering the what-next question is having the energy to do something -- which is one reason I've decided to retire now rather than too late.
The next step -- or at any rate, my next step -- involves two more questions: What is worth doing? What is within my reach?
The answers can be as grand or as humble as inclination and resources dictate. Jimmy Carter's next step was befitting of his knowledge and influence as a former American president. He merely set out to improve the world: to feed the hungry; house the homeless; and promote democracy, health, economic security and peace abroad. He and his Carter Center have done a lot of good on all these fronts. He may, in fact, be better known -- and surely is more universally well-regarded -- for his work with Habitat for Humanity...

Now, we'll see more of him than ever before.
Eventually, Raspberry will have to pay for all the lies he told and harm he caused.
Raspberry has by no means been the worst of the lot.
He has even shown signs of normal reasoning and clarity from time to time.
I never heard of him.
Consider yourself lucky.
Earth to Dinosaur Media - we really don't care, just go away.
I wait with baited breath the next announcement that William has found his favorite bran flake cereal on sale at the supermarket.
Raspberry was an old school moderate Democrat who mostly focused on city issues. He recognized that blacks needed to achieve academically, build businesses and acquire capital if they were going to progress beyond their civil rights gains. He was also skeptical of affirmative action. Not a conservative but at least he was a thinking Democrat.
spend more time On The Down Low....
"spend more time On The Down Low...."
Now THAT was a low blow
Wait. There's a third nightmare scenario: Continue pontificating even after you've become a senile old fool, like Uncle Walter.
I would agree. I would never insult or dismiss such an honorable opposition figure, like some of the posters seem to have done. If there were more Democrats like this, our side would have to raise its standards a little.
Probably on PBS.
I wish me well.
Maybe when he leaves that sterile bubble of liberalism in lives in everyday being a newspaper columnist for the Post, he might find some actual American and realize about half of what he believes as absolute truth in fact is a complete fabrication
I wish me well...............Uh' I meant "I wish him well"
"The problem may be nationwide, but I've chosen to start in my home town of Okolona, Miss. "
Welcome home Mr Raspberry. Okolona is just one of our 152 school districts that need all the help they can get.
For years he has been worrying about sitting on a luxury liner in a wheelchair.... He's crazier than I thought.
