Stuff the smugglers into a trunk and leave them in the desert on a hot day.
Sorry if I seem harsh, but humans and dogs have a long, interdependent relationship. They truly are "mans best friend" - loyal, trusting, and intelligent. We owe them better. Any man who would abuse a dog would do the same to other people.

Are they bring them over hoping to sell them?Yes.
The animals are usually mixed-breed poodles and other toy breeds and sold to buyers at swap meets or through classified advertising. Most of them don't live for very long as they haven't been vaccinated and many of them have parvovirus, distemper, scabies and other ailments.

God bless puppies everywhere.
The love of my life, Sparky Pulido decided to spend Christmas with Jesus this year!!
Lucky Him!
My first Christmas without Sparky, tears are in my eyes already. It will be a blue Christmas without him.

Just seems like they wouldn't get much for them if they aren't purebred or documented... Not really worth the trouble. I'd think the same volume of drugs as they have puppies would gain them a lot more.

Oh, I'm so sorry you lost Sparkey! I have lost 5 over the years and each one breaks my heart a little more.
As for the smugglers, they, like puppy mills would be out of business in a heartbeat if the puppy buying public would use their heads. Don't buy puppies from middle men (this includes pet shops, flea markets, people in the Walmart parking lot, etc). Do your research before you buy a puppy and see what sorts of health problems the breed has so you can know which health clearances the parents should have and what they should look like (and yes, you should ask to see them). Deal with a breeder who wants to know about YOU and not just if your check will clear. OR get your puppy from a humane shelter.

So sorry for your loss of Sparky Pulido...
The Power of the Dog
Rudyard Kipling
THERE is sorrow enough in the natural way From men and women to fill our day; And when we are certain of sorrow in store, Why do we always arrange for more? Brothers and Sisters, I bid you beware Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.Buy a pup and your money will buy Love unflinching that cannot lie Perfect passion and worship fed By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head. Nevertheless it is hardly fair To risk your heart for a dog to tear. When the fourteen years which Nature permits Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits, And the vets unspoken prescription runs To lethal chambers or loaded guns, Then you will findits your own affair But . . . youve given your heart to a dog to tear. When the body that lived at your single will, With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!). When the spirit that answered your every mood Is gonewherever it goesfor good, You will discover how much you care, And will give your heart to a dog to tear. Weve sorrow enough in the natural way, When it comes to burying Christian clay. Our loves are not given, but only lent, At compound interest of cent per cent. Though it is not always the case, I believe, That the longer weve kept em, the more do we grieve. For, when debts are payable, right or wrong, A short-time loan is as bad as a long So why inHeaven (before we are there) Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear? |
(I hope it's not too late for someone to find you a furry Christmas present.)

Maybe, but mixed breeds like labradoodles sell in the range of $2500 apiece all over the internet. And yes, people buy them.

Just seems like they wouldn't get much for them if they aren't purebred or documented...The documents are forged and the article claims most of the dogs sell for $300 to $1,000.
I'd think the same volume of drugs as they have puppies would gain them a lot more.
There is more money in drugs, but the penalities are a lot stiffer if you're caught. When it comes to smuggling puppies, the article stated: "In egregious cases, smugglers are cited and fined." That's just a slap on the wrist.
To: DumpsterDiver; brytlea
Well, people are nuts... this dovetails nicely I guess with the ping from last night about the decision to not sell pets on ebay.

Yes, it will. Hang in there.

Many years ago, when my mom was young, she got one of these puppies - not one from Mexico, but from an ad in a mail order. They called her down to the train station to pick up this poor, abused puppy.
She spent a great deal of on vet bills until they finally just put the poor thing to sleep. It died of liver failure from massive parasitic infection.
People in those days didn't really know about puppy mills and such. Today there is no excuse. People irresponsibly breeding puppies is an old problem.
