A 41-year-old peace activist who says she wanted to inspect a United States warship for weapons of mass destruction has been charged with trespassing.
Margaret Pestorius, from the activist group Peace by Peace, said she and four other people went at 8.30am (AEST) yesterday to a restricted area of Trinity Wharf at Cairns, in north Queensland, where the frigate the USS Ingraham was berthed.
"We were hoping to inspect it," Ms Pestorius said today.
"We wanted to know what weapons were on board the ship, where the ship has been and what operations the ship is involved in."
Ms Pestorius said Peace by Peace had tried to inspect five US warships in the port of Cairns over the last six months.
"The US are the world's major users and producers of weapons of mass destruction, so we feel like we've got more of a chance of finding them there (on ships) than anywhere else, really."
Ms Pestorius said she also wanted to give the US sailors candy canes for Christmas and leaflets on the rights of conscientious objectors.
Police said she scaled a chain wire and a barbed wire fence before being arrested and put into a paddy wagon.
She said she sang as she was taken to the watchhouse to be charged with trespass.
"I sang the hymn Bring Forth the Kingdom of Mercy," she said.
Ms Pestorius is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on January 5.
Seems like this woman has been near a lot of radioactive material before this......
Wow, she's very intelligent. Next time, she should bring a pair of box cutters along with her- to inspect all the boxes onboard.
lol. another DUmmie bites the dust.
Yeah, what a martyr.
"Where do you keep your nuclear weapons?"
Call me skeptical, but I doubr Ms Pest could recognise a Weapon of Mass Destruction.
That and the "candycanes for Christmas" on a US military vessel should have the ACLU filing a lawsuit against her
Sorry maam I can neither confirm nor deny those reports. And my 12 gauge here says to get the hell off my ship.
I served in the RAN for over twenty years - so I have a bit of experience with warships and their armament. And I wouldn't really know where to start looking on a US warship. The odds of her finding anything...
We don't do nukes onboard surface ships anymore. We haven't done chemical weapons since 1972. And if BM3 Schmedlap hadn't hit the brothels in Pattaya we wouldn't have any biological weapons either.
"We wanted to know what weapons were on board the ship, where the ship has been and what operations the ship is involved in."
Police said she scaled a chain wire and a barbed wire fence before being arrested and put into a paddy wagon.
It was a great plan, I can't imagine where it went wrong.

Seems many of these types have a twisted sense of good and evil.
