Just four days after bowing out of a reelection campaign -- and paving the way for a 2008 presidential run -- Governor Mitt Romney yesterday drew his first rebuke from a White House rival.
Romney had been quoted as saying of Senator John McCain of Arizona: ''You know, John McCain, the other day, said that he thinks about being president every day in the shower. I guess I'd turn instead to the words of 'Star Wars,' which is it's in a galaxy far, far away. Look, that's down the road. It's a lifetime away in the world of politics."
When ABC's George Stephanopoulos ran a tape of Romney's comments on his show, ''This Week," yesterday, McCain shot back: ''I'm glad that the governor is paying attention to the jokes that I tell on talk shows, but New Hampshire is not that far away from Massachusetts."

Well, Romney's comment plainly (to me, anyway) talks about a matter of time...
McCain's response discusses a geographic distance...
If there's only one slot in "witty school" McCain gets it, hands down. McCain had some four days to come up with a retort and this is the best he could do?

Apparently Gov Romney hasn't heard that criticizing McCain in any way is illegal per CFR. I understand that when constituents petition the maverick Senator from Arizona they must prostrate themselves on the ground and address him as "My Lord," or "Your Highness."

McCain shot back: ''I'm glad that the governor is paying attention to the jokes that I tell on talk shows, but New Hampshire is not that far away from Massachusetts." No, no, no.....
To accurately quote McCain, you have to add the McCainese emphasis to his words. Like this:
McCain shot back: ''I'm glad that the governor ish paying attention to the jokesh that I tell on talk showsh, but New Hampshire ish not that far away from Mashshachusettsh."
Maintain the "shtatush quo", John.......

but New Hampshire is not that far away from Massachusetts." Hmmm. That is a particularly interesting statement to make in public.
McCain just wrote off the Masshole vote by identifying Mass with another galaxy
Not a bad strategy or observation.
