Optimistic Iraqis Salute America

WASHINGTON — Iraqis are surprisingly optimistic about their lives and future despite violence and terrorism — most say they feel safe and a growing majority supports democracy, an intriguing ABC News poll found.

Most Iraqis also want U.S. forces to stay until security is better, the poll found — even though they don't like being occupied.

Some 71 percent of Iraqis say their own lives are going well now and they're also very bullish on Thursday's election — an impressive 76 percent say they expect that vote to pick a stable Iraqi government.

Also, Germany has a new Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is replacing anti-American Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder in the latest German elections.

She is also the leader of the conservative Christian Democratic Party, which is traditionally pro-American.

In France, anti-American Chirac is on his way out too, lets hope for similar results.

I hope Jaques Zerat goes and have high hopes for Merkel.

We'll have to see how this plays out.

and the Sunnis who ran the show and got the spoils under Saddam — and clearly resent their loss of clout to Shiites and Kurds

Change a few words in this sentence and you would be describing our own democrats, liberals, socialist and msm.

The loss of power.
