Optimistic Iraqis Salute America

WASHINGTON — Iraqis are surprisingly optimistic about their lives and future despite violence and terrorism — most say they feel safe and a growing majority supports democracy, an intriguing ABC News poll found.

Most Iraqis also want U.S. forces to stay until security is better, the poll found — even though they don't like being occupied.

Some 71 percent of Iraqis say their own lives are going well now and they're also very bullish on Thursday's election — an impressive 76 percent say they expect that vote to pick a stable Iraqi government.

The fact that a majority want U.S. troops to stay for now comes despite the fact that 65 percent oppose the presence of those troops — suggesting they see it as necessary for security but don't like it.

Murtha doesn't understand the Iraqis but he doesn't hesitate to misrepresent them in order to manipulate the war for political gain.

These people aren't stupid, they know that they need us and they also know not to look a gift horse in the mouth. They know and we know that when the time comes to leave we will all know it. A successful Iraq will cause a great shock wave through the Arab street with the cry of freedom.

The poll also found sharp differences between the majority Shiites, who were repressed by Saddam Hussein, and the Sunnis who ran the show and got the spoils under Saddam — and clearly resent their loss of clout to Shiites and Kurds.

This is key, most if not all of the negative polling came from Saddam loyalists who lost power.

I saw a special on Fox News Channel the other day about the successes in Iraq, I never realized they already have a stock market, even if it is a small one for now.
