Midshipmen catch naps as they wait for more than an hour for U.S. President George W.
Bush to deliver an address on the war in Iraq at the U.S. Naval Academy in
Annapolis, Maryland November 30, 2005. Trying to counter critics of his war
strategy, Bush vowed on Wednesday that U.S. forces will not cut and run from Iraq
but said improvements in Iraqi security forces may clear the way for a reduction in
U.S. troops. REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst

Were you in the Navy or was this a long time ago?

Both! Kiddy cruise in the Navy, then Air Force. Boot Camp in 59.

I'm sure they were there VERY early. Hell, it's preparing them for the one thing that will consistent in their military careers..."Hurry up & wait!"

Never could make up my mind if he was BS-ing me or not.

He wasn't. Been there, done that! A7's are the best! Wide, deep and long enough intake that you can't be seen from the outside. Hence the boot to FOD the engine. I'd rather be court martialed than cause a jet mech to speak ill of the dead.

Rush cuts the applause from the audio clips he uses to save time.

As I usually don't get to hear the speech live, I like the applause left in on the "re-runs".

Local radio left some in - the audience at Annapolis was going wild - this latest Rutters sniping is just one more reason I wish Rush would leave the applause in or at least some of them.

The speech actually started 2 or 3 minutes earlier than expected.

Hey, when I was a naval officer I was always taught that you should never, ever pass up a chance to catch some sleep. One hour of sleep will keep you going for another 4 hours awake. These midshipmen are to be commended for their practice.

Midshipmen asleep before a speech. No, that never happened in my day. What slackers Mids are these days. <\sarcasm>

At this time of year (right before the end of term) most Mids are running on fumes. I remember classmates keeping each other awake in class to avoid the prof smacking them in the back with an eraser (chalk dust looks really great on your black class uniform, especially right before inspection). And I also remember the one time the President spoke when I was there (I won't reveal which President to avoid dating myself). We had to go to the football stadium hours beforehand for security reasons. I was kicked out of my room at 6AM because it overlooked the field where Marine One was to land; Secret Service types with long cases containing high powered rifles locked themselves in my room after my roommates and I were kicked out. You can bet I tried to catch some Zs waiting for the speech.

It would be news if Reuters could have found someone who was actually awake. These photos are dog bites man, but Reuters has an agenda.

By the time their military careers are finished, an hour nap will seem like a 5 minute walk in springtime.

I suppose that it was GWB that made them all tired as well?

A totally misleading photo implying Bush was late and made everyone wait a la Clinton.

That headline made me wonder why the President was late. I guess he wasn't; the Middies were just there early. Good for them catching a few Z's and phooey on RotoRooters.

I actually work for the Navy so I am sure they were there early. I have been in classes with sailors and I arrive at the assigned time; they are already halfway thru what they are working on when I get there. Mostly all the officers and enlisted I work with are on time or early; we do have civilians in mgmt positions that think little of being late. The way the reuters is touting this makes it look like President Bush was two hours late.

Just sent this to my son at West Point. I also told him that if he turned back the trophy now there would be no questions asked.

And being a fomer Marine myself, I cannot bring myself to say, 'Go Army, Beat Navy,' so I won't.

I wondered where and when you might have been issued one. My dad never was, and he did basic in 1943. He started with an M1 and went on to a heavy mortar and Ma Deuce. I carried a Singer built Springfield in Navy boot during '75 and dad didn't even know what it was.

Looks like some midshipmen need their butts kicked.

No, this seems like a leadership issue. the person in charge should have assessed the situation and planned accordingly. Blame the chief and not the indians.

He wasn't BS'ing you. I busted a guy for smoking a joint in the intake of an A-7. Amazing - stroking a lighter within about 5 ft of 2000 gallons of jet fuel.

What year and ship? A former shipmate of mine was so busted after he transferred out of our squadron.

Plebe son says 'I can sleep at any time, any place and in any position, but it does help to be sitting down'. Bursting with pride here.
