The CIA'S war against the Bush administration is one of the great untold stories of the past three years. It is, perhaps, the agency's most successful covert action of recent times. The CIA has used its budget to fund criticism of the administration by former Democratic officeholders. The agency allowed an employee, Michael Scheuer, to publish and promote a book containing classified information, as long as, in Scheuer's words, "the book was being used to bash the president." However, the agency's preferred weapon has been the leak. In one leak after another, generally to the New York Times or the Washington Post, CIA officials have sought to undermine America's foreign policy. Usually this is done by leaking reports or memos critical of administration policies or skeptical of their prospects. Through it all, our principal news outlets, which share the agency's agenda and profit from its torrent of leaks, have maintained a discreet silence about what should be a major scandal.
Recent events indicate that the CIA might even be willing to compromise the effectiveness of its own covert operations, if by doing so it can damage the Bush administration.

Further, the paper said that it "is not publishing the names of the Eastern European countries involved in the covert program, at the request of senior U.S. officials." So this top-secret leak was apparently not a rogue operation. On the contrary, it appears to have been consistent with the agency's longstanding campaign against the Bush administration, which plainly has been sanctioned (if not perpetrated) by officials at the agency's highest levels.

Clean 'em out. Cut the budget and give it to Defense intelligence agenices. CIA is basically a tool of the State Dept and that is a total rats nest.
This is Clinton's coup.
The trecherous bastard should have been tried, convicted and hanged for treason years ago.

Several things struck me as bizarre. Do you remember the CIA "analysis" showing how TWA 800 shot itself down? Only a politicized and corrupted CIA would have lent themselves to a pantomime such as that one.
I remember the immediate leak to the press when Czech intel reported Atta had met with Iraqi intel. The leak was immediate, within a couple of hours. When the Czechs reiterated their claim, with the Czech president swearing by it, the CIA leak was again immediate. And what was the basis of the CIA's denial? When you dig down deep, their denial that it occurred is based on the fact that they didn't witness it. Nothing more.
But it was essential to debunk a story they couldn't in honesty deny, because to not deny it was to aid the president.
The whole Niger affair smells the same. They held a fake investigation, and then made the results public. When Navy intel reported a warehouse full of contraband uranium, they refused to go and look. The whole "fake documents" episode seems to have been a French intel sting operation, to which CIA was a willing accomplice.
Again and again, in the aftermath of the war, nerve agent stockpiles were found at Iraqi ammo dumps, and then dismissed as "bug poison", as if there were some essential difference between the two, and as if it was normal to store pesticides in a military ammo dump. We are still wondering whatever happened to all of those chemical weapons when in fact we've re-defined them out of existence.
There is something very strange going on over there, and they almost succeeded in taking out a president. Some are already calling it an attempted coup, and I would concur.
CIA gets paid to do this kind of thing overseas. They are not supposed to do it within the US.
Well.....Fritgerald is still going. Goss (appointed by Bush) has him investigating more than a pencil pusher leak. Let's see if Fritz is as apolitical as the democrats claim he is.
save for manana.
I distinctly remember we conservatives BEGGING the Administration to clean the Clintonites out of the security services and the State Department in 2001.
We were treated like we were crazy.
This has been a good lesson to them. They need to listen to their base (like that's suppose to be a new concept!).
Bush tried to "get along", but found out it's like trying to get along with Al Quata. It'll never happen.
You would need a mighty long wall to deal with all of the traitors and domestic enemies at foggy bottom, and up the river.
I thought Porter Goss was cleaning house. What happened?
Hmph. It doesn't seem like they learn that well to me.
He's cleaned out a lot of the roaches so far. Many quit as soon as he accepted the job. The rest are "undercover", and he's still drawing them out.
I think he'll pay off. He doesn't seem like a slacker.
I think some have hardened up a bit. Some is better than none.
I hope he gets the job done soon, these rats need to go and every President going forward needs to think about pulling a Hillary and cleaning house across the board and putting in their own people.
Yep. It's like putting a welfare democrat in charge of your bank account!
"... there are reporters finally mentioning that the whole Joe Wilson trip was part of a larger internal CIA plan to discredit the Bush administration."
Where do you get that from .. I've only seen reporter after reporter on TV denying that Joe Wilson has been lying, even when they are reminded that the Senate Select Committee on Intel made that statement after they interviewed him.
I don't think that's a good idea in that (for better or for worse) there is a lot of expertise at CIA that would be lost. Also it presumes that there are no decent, non-partisan analysts, operatives and employees at the Agency, when in fact (as we all hope) the leakers are most likely "minority reporters" who didn't get their way. In fact, my personal suspicion is that most of this information is coming from self-appointed "Daniel Ellsberg"-type former employees (like Scheuer) who may, or may not, still have "social contacts" within the Agency. Apparently there was a spate of resignations/retirements after the fall of the Clinton regime, and in the wake of the liberation of Iraq.
There are a number of common sense measures (some of which are probably already in place) that can help to clean any turds out of the nest: a. "beef up" the counter-intelligence and inspector-general functions within CIA (to include adding some undercover FBI types to "mind the minders"); b. instigate a new series of "bring up to date" background investigations and polygraph exams on current and former employees; c. putting more FBI counter-intelligence agents inside the Beltway to monitor CIA, and applying the Judith Miller squeeze on more Left-Wing reporters to find out from whence the leaks are emanating; d. letting the leakers feel the pressure that Scooter Libby is under (i.e. prosecuting them to the fullest extent of the law). To me that sounds like a better approach.
I think this is just one more drip drip drip to take our President down via media 30 second sound bites. No matter the outcome of an investigation... They've done their dirty deeds and tarred him by innuendo.
Nothing short of a suitcase nuke will change the public's opinion that our leader is an idiot who can't conduct a war, let alone brush his teeth without someone helping him. Even then, it'd end up being his fault.
