"Imagine what a sub could do."

Very little. Terrorist pirates use small high-speed fiberglass boats and small arms. Some of these boats go as fast as the torpedoes in inventory.

Actually, if I had to do this sort of mission, it would be a two-part presence/deterrence w/ Patrol Craft flying the colors and a one Q-ship to have some fun with the bastards.

Yeah, I've been thinking along similar lines.... why doesn't the US charter a few assorted civilian craft, load them with plenty of hidden firepower, and cruise the dangerous waters off Somalia, Yemen, Indonesia (also experiencing many such attacks on international shipping). Could have the US Navy within shouting distance in case of a really big problem, but taking out 2-3 small craft shouldn't be a problem for a well-armed crew. Boy would some of those 'pirates' be in for a rude surprise when their 'prey' opens up on them......

p.s. Yes, I know that Indonesia is thousands of miles from Somalia, but there is also a big problem there with piracy or whatever we want to call it, and the strong potential for terrorists to take over a large oil tanker, etc.

My opinion is that these guys' primary mission was the acquisition of loot, which makes the term "pirate" accurate. The fact that they are Muslim is relevant, but terror and destruction would more likely have been a by product of their piracy than its main point. Piracy on both yachts and large ships is fairly common east of Africa.

'Course going after a cruise ship is new, I think for these guys.

The only problem with Q-ship, although I love the idea, is that once it is used once, pictures of the ship would be spread around the internet and pirates would avoid it. However, one use may be significant enough to deter many would be pirates.

How many pirates carry digital cameras. Besides, the idea is to NOT leave witnesses.

What does that have to do with it? Non sequitur.

What bothers me is if it would be possible for the terrorists to take over some obscure ship(s) and fake everyone out up to and including the entry to a USA (or other ally's) port with a nuke or other explosives and blow up the port.

Piracy is very common today, even though it doesn't make the news. Check out Piracy Report

"...pirates are terrorists in the water."

Wrong. Pirates plundered. Terrorists murder...PERIOD.

This is not all that suprising. Your ship is attacked and - SUPRISE - you can still remember it two days later. Amazing!

Yes but your average cruise age is 75 so what with alzheimer's and all its pretty remarkable..... ;-)
