SUMMIT NOTEBOOK: Distance shows in photo

MAR DEL PLATA, Argentina - The staff for the Summit of the Americas was doing its best to keep some distance between President Bush and Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez, leaders less than warm toward each other. Then came the class photo.

When the leaders of the 34 nations gathered for their official summit photograph, Bush was supposed to be in the front row, just off the center. Chavez was supposed to be behind him in the second row.

Before the leaders turned out for the picture, set up on a hotel rooftop overlooking the ocean, summit staffers noticed the close configuration — and decided it wasn't ideal. They moved Bush's name tag a few places to his left.

Chavez and Bush were also far apart during the summit sessions, thanks to seating arranged alphabetically in Spanish. Estados Unidos is on the other end of the alphabet from Venezuela.

Had the staff used English, only Uruguay would have separated them.

If Laura Bush wanted to keep her 59th birthday a secret, her husband wasn't helping.

Bush put the bug in reporters' ears that his wife was celebrating her special day at the summit.

"It's a good place to spend Laura's birthday, which is today," Bush told a small group of reporters Friday. "I don't know if you knew that. No, I know you did, OK. But anyway, don't bring it up when you see her."

To mark the occasion, the president gave the first lady a green glass stone necklace and matching earrings, according to Susan Whitson, Mrs. Bush's press secretary.

The president and White House staff celebrated Mrs. Bush's birthday Thursday on Air Force One en route to Argentina with a coconut cake and a "Happy Birthday" serenade.

On Friday, Argentine women leaders toasted her birthday — and sang to her, too.

The Bushes have more reason to celebrate on Saturday. It's their 28th wedding anniversary.

Yes, that's right. Her birthday and their anniversary are close.

Happy Anniversary to two of the most DECENT, LOVING people we have had in the White House since former President George Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush.

Best Wishes from us who love you.

They should have put Chavez on the hard left.

They should have thrown Chavez off the roof.

fewer civilians, fewer higher rooftops that snipers can use, plus they probably didn't want the world seeing the city close-up
