ASSOCIATED PRESS EDMOND, Okla. -- An Edmond woman has died after being run over by her minivan, which was loaded with her three young children as they prepared to go to church.Police say Jodi Russell was alert and conscious when she was taken by helicopter to the OU Medical Center Thursday afternoon with broken bones and internal injuries. But police spokeswoman Glynda Chu says Russell died about 11:00 p.m. last night. Chu says Russell was backing down a steep driveway when a bee or wasp flew into the van. Russell told police she put the van in park and got out. Chu says the woman probably thought she put it in park and the first firefighter on the seen found the van in reverse. Russell's 1-, 3- and 5-year-old children in the van weren't injured. The 5-year-old told police they were going to church to deliver baked goods.

A horrific accident to a college friend of my wife's. The funeral was today and it has hit my wife hard as we have three young children also. To have their children witness such a tragedy is unspeakable. My prayers goes out to all the wonderful mother's doing their best to raise their children, attending church, and helping their community.

Condolonces to you, and indirectly to the family of this woman. A tragedy, to be sure.

However, this does point out why it is important, even on an automatic, to set the parking brake as well as putting the transmission in Park.

Was a case of a driver going down the road, window open, and his left elbow resting on the door....A wasp flew into the sleeve of his short-sleeve shirt, and he wound up out of control, flipping his vehicle 5 times. He died a few days later.

Bottom line in these cases. Pay attention. Don't get distracted. It will kill you.

Often times the only thing you want to do is get away from the wasp. If she were allergic to wasp stings, the fear of that may have overrode her common sense. Cant monday morning quarteback this play.

Oh, that's awful. I am so sorry. I know that it sounds trite, but freak accidents happen every day. Again, though, I am very sorry for you and for her family and other friends.

Heh. I was cruising down a little dirt county road on my dirt bike about 25 years ago and a yellow jacket got in my helmet somehow. Didn’t cause a wreck but I recall the old Elsinore was unceremoniously flung to the ground while I stripped my helmet off.

Just goes to show that even if you're going ~60 on a dirt road you can stop pretty quickly if you're really motivated.

Damn yellow jackets. One got inside a beer can once when I was fishing. That caused some momentary excitement.

I don't have a whole lot of fears but a wasp flying into my vehicle while I'm driving is one of my strongest phobias.

This happened to me once. I had a yellow jacket fly up my skirt. Fortunately I had slowed down to go through a gate and was able to pull over and jump out. Got stung 3 times though!

I once shared a pepperoni roll with a Yellow Jacket; Looked like Marlon Brando until the Budweiser took effect.

I don't know why they don't bring back the Hillholder on transmissions; the old Ford FMX was the last automatic I remember having that feature and it was selectable so it wouldn't cover all situations.

Some people shouldn't be allowed to draw pictures; you've left me panting and pouting.

Tragic. The best thing to do if confronted by an insect like a wasp or bee is to be still and blow on them. It does the trick every time (especially if you just ate some linberger). Seriously though, it works.

"The best thing to do if confronted by an insect like a wasp or bee is to be still and blow on them."

Reminds me of a time I was holding some ice cream cones in a car when a bee or wasp landed on my arm. I couldn't drop the cones and, without thinking, I immediately began blowing on the insect. I didn't know that was a proven method, it was sheer panic when I did it. In fact, I'm surprised I didn't inhale the thing in all my blowing. Didn't get stung, though, and didn't drop the ice cream.

My Mother told me about this yesterday. They are in OKC. I think the mom was more concerned about the thing biting one of the kids than herself. What a tragic tragic accident.

My condolences to friends and family on this horrific accident.

I prefer to never get in front of or behind a car with a running engine. Make sure the brake is set, it is in park and the engine is off.

Or get your kids away from the wasp. I've got three small ones myself, and I would definitely be getting out of our van to open the back doors and try to shoo the thing out and away from them. Of course, now I'll be sure to turn the van off first.

These cell-driving flappers drive me nuts.
