Man charged with tattooing a minor

HOBART - The last few months of Marco Gonzales' life sound like a bad country-western song:

He tattooed a minor.

His trailer burned down.

Now, he's going to jail.

Gonzales, 29, pleaded guilty Monday in Hobart City Court to tattooing a minor, a Class A misdemeanor. He was sentenced to a year in jail, but with suspended time and time already served, he will serve only an additional 90 days in Lake County Jail, where he has been since his Oct. 8 arrest.

Gonzales also was sentenced to a year of formal probation with a ban on any tattooing during that time and was fined $500 plus court costs. He also must pay to have the tattoo removed if the girl chooses.

Gonzales' saga began in early August, when a friend brought over his 13-year-old girlfriend and asked Gonzales to tattoo her at Gonzales' Cressmoor Trailer Park home. Gonzales - who is not a licensed, professional tattoo artist - complied, tattooing her name, Jacquelynn, across her lower back.

The Hobart Police became involved a short while later when the girl's mother found out about the tattoo, said Hobart Police Lt. Leo Finnerty.

"She was not at all happy," he said.

Finnerty said he made several attempts to interview Gonzales about the incident but Gonzales refused to comply with his request, so a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was arrested Oct. 8 during a traffic stop in Gary, Finnerty said.

Sometime during the tattoo investigation, the rental trailer Gonzales shared with his girlfriend burned down, and that incident also is under investigation, Finnerty said. He declined to name Gonzales as a suspect, saying only, "I'm going to be talking to him."

Finnerty said Gonzales was upset Monday in city court when he was taken back to jail, not only because of the added jail time, but also because the girl's boyfriend never paid him for the tattoo.

... when a friend brought over his 13-year-old girlfriend ...

Okay, if Gonzales is 29, I wonder how old the "friend" with the 13-year-old girlfriend is?

Giving a 13 year-old a "tramp stamp" seems like a really bad idea, over and above issues of legality.

I'm sure Dr. Frued can explain why. Or maybe the answer is in Penthouse Forum.

A sad, but also humorous point.

tattooing her name, Jacquelynn, across her lower back.

"Jacquelynn's identity was not released."

Or maybe the answer is in Penthouse Forum.

KRAMER: George, George, Get a Penthouse Forum.

GEORGE: I'm not getting a Penthouse Forum.

KRAMER: That will make great dinner party conversation. We'll read the letters at the dinner table.

GEORGE: Oh, that's nice.

KRAMER: Hey, did you ever read one of these?

GEORGE: It's not real. They're all made up.

KRAMER: Oh, it's real.
