CONCORD, N.C. -- Concord police hope a surveillance video can help them arrest the two men who assaulted another man at a rest stop early Wednesday morning.

Michael Honeycutt, 48, of Seattle, was beaten and robbed at a northbound rest stop on Interstate 85, investigators said. The attack happened around 2 a.m.

Investigators believe Honeycutt was a random target [?]. They said his attackers, who were waiting near the rest stop's vending machines, hit him over the head with what appeared to be a baseball bat.

"It appears he was taken by surprise," said Maj. Allen Overcash of the Concord Police Department. "We believe he was lured into it. We believe (the suspects) intentionally struck up a conversation with him, tried to distract him."

Someone found Honeycutt in the restroom about an hour after the attack and called 911.

Honeycutt was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center, where he is still listed in critical condition. He has family in Concord.

It could be hindsight and all that, but, why would you go to a rest stop at 2 am? That seems intuitively unsafe. Why not stop at a truck stop or gas station? The only time I have ever been to a rest stop at that time of night is to sleep in my locked truck.

To rest?

In Fla there were a rash of rest stop attacks many yrs ago, so they started putting in an armed patrol and it ended.

Michael Honeycutt, 48, of Seattle...

Problem one: 3,000 miles from home and on unfamiliar turf.

...was beaten and robbed at a northbound rest stop on Interstate 85, investigators said.

Problem two: Stopping at a public rest stop for any reason.

The attack happened around 2 a.m.

Problem three: Stopping anywhere and getting out of his car at 2 a.m.

Several years ago NC started doing that also after a rash of rest stop crimes. Any time you stopped at a rest stop you saw a patrol car.
But I think the practice has been stopped.
And of course, CCW is illegal in rest stops.

A neighbor's husband was murdered in FL during that reststop spree..

She has still not recovered from the trauma... Had they been armed and trained and willing to use their weapons...they would have stood a chance of surviving... imo

CCW is illegal in the rest stops there? I'm surprised at that law in NC.

In Fla you are allowed to carry in a rest stop.

Why not stop at a truck stop or gas station?

About 10 years ago I was working on a Bellsouth project in the Charlotte area. I was filling up my truck at about 11:30PM, just before starting my nights work, and had a guy try to get in the truck with me. He was waving a pistol around thinking I'd be scared, but mine was bigger and he didn't seem to like me pointing it directly at him because he ran away rather quickly......

Having spent 18 years traveling 49 of 50 states of this country I NEVER stop at rest stops. My experience is they are THE best place to get thumped on the head and relieved of your wallet, especially after dark. I certainly would never, ever sleep in one.

Wasn't Michael Jordan's father killed while sleeping on the side of the highway in NC?

They closed a rest area on my local highway after a chopped up body was found in a freezer and another dead body was found in an abandoned car.The rest area was also closed down because it was a suspected hangout for homosexual men. There's a lot of shady things going on behind the scenes at rest stops across the country.People should remain vigilant whenever they enter one of these areas.

I slept at one inside of a Uhaul, parked between semi trucks. I guess I figured I was inconspicuous enough not to be bothered. I never got out of the truck or unlocked the doors.

My in-laws live near that rest stop. My wife said she learned as a kid to never stop there for *any* reason...

Yes, illegal at rest stops.

Any government building, including rest stops, Fairgounds, etc.

Not in NC. (may have been at one time, but I don't believe it is currently)

I would carry regardless if I had to stop at one. Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6. (or to be beat upon by 2)

I'll be making a trip in 2 wks. and will likely use the 'facilities'.
I'll double check but I'm sure that the rest stops are posted.

UPDATE:

Rest stop attackers arrested

CONCORD, N.C. -- With the help of a surveillance picture, Concord police arrested two men Friday that they believe assaulted another man at a rest stop.

Investigators said at about 2 a.m. Wednesday morning the men attacked and robbed 48-year-old Michael Honeycutt at a rest stop on Interstate 85.

After the assault, a witness found Honeycutt in the restroom and called 911. He is still in critical condition at Carolinas Medical Center.

William Snyder, 30, of Salisbury, and Christopher Byrd, 27, of Rockwell, are charged in the attack. Officers found them in the Lexington area after Food Lion officials alerted police that Honeycutt's credit cards had been used at several stores.

IIRC, that was about the same time Florida got really liberal (real sense, not political sense) with their concealed carry rules and reciproticy.

Right, this was in the mid to late 80's, and the lefties predicted blood flowing on the streets if CCW was passed.

Crime is now at a 34 yr low in Fla.

And it's going to go down even further because of this new self-defense law.
