OWENSBORO, Ky. - The days of hearing "10-4" and other law enforcement jargon on the police radio are coming to an end. Emergency responders around the country must switch to using plain language by October 2006 as part of the National Incident Management System, which was developed to help agencies work together in responding to emergencies. "It makes so much sense," said Daviess County Sheriff Keith Cain, whose department is planning on using plain language starting next month. "Common language is common language."

That and they are hiring people too stupid to remember a code list.

Not such a bad thing-
Saw the same thing in the AF in the late 70's-early 80's
With good radio discipline and proper "prowords" it can make communications much easier

This should not creat any problems provided they keep a can of Squelch near the receivers.

Emergency responders around the country must switch to using plain language I was expecting to see something about the ACLU and the demand for Spanish language.

I know some agencies were doing this way back in the 80's. The original reason for the codes had more to do with keeping things secret than brief but the various codes are published everywhere.
Most of the ones who kept using "10" codes felt it sounded more professional. Not a very good reason imo.

>>>... a can of Squelch...
Squelch comes in plastic squeeze bottles now. Easier on the ozone, and has no trans-fats.

That is the first thing I thought of.
See that thread yesterday (?) about the pilot punching the wrong code? Instead of coding that communications were out, he coded that his plane was hijacked.

I thought it was 21-50. My memory of this show is pretty good, even though I was only five the last time I watched it (47 years ago). It always started out with "Whenever the laws of any state are broken, a duly authorized organization swings into action. It may be called the state police, state troopers, militia, the Rangers, or the Highway Patrol. These are the stories of men whose training, skill and courage have enforced and preserved our state laws."

There is no such thing as a universal code list. The same codes mean different things in different jurisdictions, often not that far down the road...

Yep, Broderick Crawford. "Matthews to headquarters . . . 10-4." He must have said it a million times. LOL
