How sad that a disaster of Katrina's scale is manipulated to shore up the simplistic notion that government handouts, and reversing tax cuts, will restore the devastated region. It was the long-term application of the former, and the public's reliance on government, that left tens of thousands stranded without the means to get out of Katrina's path.
Yet even in the stark glare of Big Government's pronounced failure, pending and future tax cuts are denounced by the Left as anathema to recovery. The New York Times says President Bush should "deal responsibly with a historic disaster" and "try the path of honestly shared national sacrifice."
So, Congress should put off, or scuttle, the estate tax repeal or any other measure that saps government's ability to absorb and transfer wealth? That's buncombe.
A study by George Mason University professor Tyler Cowen found that tax reductions, not handouts, revitalized the economies of German-occupied countries and Japan after World War II. The same economic growth wouldn't have been feasible without cutting taxes.
Reducing taxes allows for investment, which will be crucial in the massive rebuilding effort. Repeal the tax cuts, or worse, raise taxes, and future investment will be curtailed in a region that can least afford it.

Revenues have increased as a result of the tax cuts. This issue isn't even debatable any more. Maybe there are reasons beyond increased revenue for tax increases. (Like socialistic income redistribution maybe?)

he also forgets to point out that as you raise taxes, people will tend to donate less. much more money will goto relief efforts if people give freely, than if they are forced to give thru taxes.
i believe the founders of our nation believed that, and saw much success thru this method.
I like the idea of starting recovery Enterprise Zones. Give employers massive tax breaks if they hire American citizens to do one of two things.
1) Rebuild housing or infrastructure within 100 miles of where either Katrina or Rita crossed the shore.
2) Build or work in new refineries to secure our supply of gasoline against future price shocks due to 'acts of God' such as these two major hurricanes.
