With $80 billion of projects under way or in the planning stages, industry participants forecast that production from the oil-sands region will nearly triple to 2.7 million barrels a day by 2015 from one million barrels a day last year. The U.S. consumes about 21 million barrels of oil a day.

The market at work. Maybe we could derail it with government interference and price controls.
On another topic, Jim, would you put a link on the main page where we can check a list of the sites which allow us to post only links or excerpts? Unless FR is already capable of notifying us at the time of post, as it did with this one when I tried to post the entire article.

Wonder how many people realize that Canada has the 2nd largest oil reserves in the world after the Saudis. This is good news.

Add to that our coal reserves, use a process similar to South Africa's SASOL.
Still need to convert the electrical grid to nuclear. The Monticello plant may likely be decommissioned soon. What will replace it?

I wonder how many people realize that the U.S. now imports more oil from Canada than from Saudi Arabia.

"Wonder how many people realize that Canada has the 2nd largest oil reserves in the world after the Saudis." Actually, Canada is third, after the US and then the Saudis, when you include shale oil.

Thankfully it sounds as if Alberta's Govt is not the hostage of the Eckowackos like ours is.

This is what Infoplease says about Oil Reserves as of 2005.
Rank Country Proved reserves (billion barrels) 1. Saudi Arabia 261.9 2. Canada 178.81 3. Iran 125.8 4. Iraq 115.0 5. Kuwait 101.5 6. United Arab Emirates 97.8 7. Venezuela 77.2 8. Russia 60.0 9. Libya 39.0 10. Nigeria 35.3
But I do not know if they count currently unproductive types like Shale or Sand oils.

It also instructive to note that "proven reserves" do not include areas that are roped off by the US government (state and federal). The US has large crude reserves that are technologically & economically availabe, but politically unavailable. Thus, they are not counted as proven reserves.
The off limits areas in the gulf are not allowed to be inventoried, so those reserves are not counted as "proven".
If anyone knows otherwise, or can add to this, please do.

I wonder what the limits on executive orders are? I would be delighted if President Bush by executive order would allow the mining and extractions of reserves that have been put off limits by the environmental Nazis.
In relationship to the Enviro Nazis, Fox News explained how back in the late sixties they stopped via a law suit the building of flood barriers at the opening of Lake Pontchartrain. These barriers would have saved New Orleans. Can they be sued for this?
Perhaps Congress Critter Billy Bob can shed some light on these two questions.
