AUSTRALIAN diplomats should have ignored American orders and gone straight into New Orleans to rescue trapped Australians, Opposition Leader Kim Beazley said today. Mr Beazley said the Government should have used its special relationship with the United States to get into the disaster zone after Hurricane Katrina struck last week.
"I was defence minister for a few years," Mr Beazley said.
"You've got your special mates in your equivalent defence forces in the United States.
"You ring up your special mates and you jump on a chopper, that's what you do."
But is he seriously suggesting that the Australian government should have asked US servicemen to disobey orders not to let foreign diplomats into the disaster area?
And is he seriously suggesting that if such a request was made, that US servicemen would have done it?
Good grief.
I don't care who sends them. If foreign troops ever set foot on US soil they should be shipped back dead....
He's probably suggesting that, by knowing the right people, a couple of folks could have gotten "official" passes to enter NO through the checkpoints, retrieve the Aussies, and leave. Stuff like this happens all the time. I don't get the impression he's planning an invasion at all. So let's not get hysterical about it.
Uhhh. NO. He's not saying what you're interpreting at all. He's saying just the opposite which would border on an act of war.
He's probably suggesting that, by knowing the right people, a couple of folks could have gotten "official" passes to enter NO
What part of "ignoring American orders" didn't you understand?
Well, let's turn this around. Suppose a US diplomat sprouted a pair (fat chance) and went into a disaster area in a foreign country to rescue US citizens. Would you be for or against it?
Oh, I understand all of it. He's talking about ignoring the rules made for the masses and getting through the checkpoints with passes procured by "friends," not about some wild-ass invasion. But if you'd like the indulge yourself in your fantasy, be my guest.
